Title: Arizona Bill Would Establish Ten International Studies Schools
Body: From http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/84301 Foreign languages backed for kindergarten Samantha M. Novick February 17, 2007 A Mesa lawmaker wants to help the state schools chief launch a program to begin teaching children foreign language in kindergarten. Tom Horne, state superintendent of public instruction, has said such training would make Arizona graduates more competitive in an international economy. Rep. Mark Anderson, RMesa, wants to help Horne by establishing 10 schools of international studies where students would learn two languages and international business before they graduate. Possible languages include Chinese, Hindi and Korean. Anderson’s HB2741 would enable three elementary schools — one each in northern, southern and central Arizona — to start teaching a foreign language in kindergarten. Seven high schools also would be designated to teach language, global history and business classes. Read the entire article at http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/84301 .

Title: News Article: Demand for English Lessons Outstrips Supply
Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/27/education/27esl.html?_r=1&oref=slogin Demand for English Lessons Outstrips Supply By FERNANDA SANTOS February 27, 2007 As immigrants increasingly settle away from large urban centers — New York’s suburbs have had a net gain of 225,000 since 2000, compared with 44,000 in the city — many are waiting months or even years to get into government-financed English classes, which are often overcrowded and lack textbooks. A survey last year by the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials found that in 12 states, 60 percent of the free English programs had waiting lists, ranging from a few months in Colorado and Nevada to as long as two years in New Mexico and Massachusetts, where the statewide list has about 16,000 names. Title: School District, Media Reach Out to Spanish-Speaking Families
Body: From http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/newsline/archives/2007/02/school_district_2.html School District, Media Reach Out to Spanish-Speaking Families Austin American-Statesman (TX) February 18, 2007 Katie Humphrey reports that more than 1,000 people attended the inaugural Feria para Aprender (Fair for Learning) on Saturday morning at Austin's Burger Center. The Austin school district and local Spanish-language media, including ¡Ahora sí!, a weekly newspaper published by the Austin American-Statesman, organized the free event to provide Spanish-speaking parents with information about the American education system and education-oriented nonprofit groups. More than 70 nonprofit organizations, such as LifeWorks and Girl Scouts, set up booths to provide information about subjects such as early childhood education and filling out financial aid forms for college. School district officials realized that there was a demand for such an event, which was conducted almost exclusively in Spanish, when they got feedback from parents who heard daily education tips on a local Spanish-language radio station. "We really want to offer [parents] context about education, instead of just saying, 'Get diplomas,'" event Chairwoman Sylvia Acevedo said. "If you weren't brought up middle class in the U.S., you might not know what that means." Read the entire article at http://tinyurl.com/2f6zdz .

Title: News Article: Mandarin Chinese in a Predominantly Hispanic Chicago School
Body: From http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/263029,CST-NWS-triling19.article Little Village's trilingual kids Mandarin Chinese mandatory at school where 90% speak only Spanish at home February 19, 2007 BY ESTHER J. CEPEDA Students learn Mandarin Chinese as part of their everyday studies at Cyrus McCormick Elementary School. Located in Little Village, the school is 99% Hispanic and in 2000 became the first predominantly Hispanic Chicago public school to offer Chinese instruction. "We're a model school, the only school in the system where every student is taught Mandarin Chinese -- even those who are learning English," said Principal Virginia Rivera. While offering Chinese instruction is not uncommon in charter or elite magnet schools, Chicago Public Schools boasts the largest public school Chinese program in the country. It's one of Mayor Daley's pet projects, part of his push to provide Chicago schoolchildren with the skills necessary to compete in an increasingly global economy. McCormick kids receive 20 to 25 minutes of instruction five times a week from a Chinese teacher who comes into the classroom to weave language lessons into a broader curriculum that exposes kids to all aspects of Chinese culture -- far more than just this week's upcoming celebration of the new Year of the Pig. Title: Supporters Rally to Save German at Southern Oregon University
Body: From http://www.mailtribune.com/archive/2007/0226/local/stories/german_at_sou.htm Supporters rally to save German at SOU Administrators have received so much feedback about impending cuts that they've delayed finalizing them until March 12 By Paris Achen February 26, 2007 German teachers from across Oregon and other advocates of the language have decried Southern Oregon University's plan to eliminate German as a major — mounting a letter-writing campaign and challenging the justification for the proposed cut. "If this decision is not reversed, Southern Oregon University will be the first (Oregon University System) institution to eliminate the teaching of one of the most important languages of the 21st century," wrote Christian Stehr, an Oregon State University German professor spearheading the effort. German is one of three majors, along with geography and geology, marked for elimination at SOU as the university struggles to deal with an ongoing budget shortage. Basic classes in all three programs will remain. Read the entire article at http://www.mailtribune.com/archive/2007/0226/local/stories/german_at_sou.htm .
