Novick February 17, 2007 A Mesa lawmaker wants to help the state schools chief launch a program to begin teaching children foreign language in kindergarten. Tom Horne, state superintendent of public instruction, has said such training would make Arizona graduates more competitive in an international economy. Rep. Mark Anderson, RMesa, wants to help Horne by establishing 10 schools of international studies where students would learn two languages and international business before they graduate. Possible languages include Chinese, Hindi and Korean. Anderson’s HB2741 would enable three elementary schools — one each in northern, southern and central Arizona — to start teaching a foreign language in kindergarten.
