Title: Foreign Language Week Ideas
Body: Foreign Language Week in 2007 is March 5-11. Here are some ideas for celebrating it: --- I had my 8th graders go on the internet to pre-assigned websites to find five facts about Francophone culture. These facts are on pieces of paper with a fleur de lis and an Eiffel Tower. The idea is to paper the walls of the school with French facts. DiGennaro, R. Re: Foreign Language Week. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 24 Feb 2007). --- We have a Foreign Language Week for grades 5-8. Here are some activities we do: 1. Daily trivia question, read in each world language class. Don't give out answer 'til the next day because it's the same question all day long. We pick one winner per grade level and winners receive a FR/SP pencil or similar trinket. Sample upper elem. questions, : "What European country is shaped like a boot?", "In what country would you find the Great Wall?". 2. We work with the local grocery store to decorate bags. We pick up a huge stack of paper bags prior to the week then students decorate them with target language words and illustrations during the first day of FL Week. We return to grocery store and customers get a custom-illustrated grocery bag. Brainstorm vocabulary and design ideas first. 3. Likewise, older students, 6th gr., make bookmarks for the local library. They are so festive and very culturally appropriate. Words are checked first for spelling. We put them in a decorative basket and place them at the circulation counter. 4. Hat Day, Flag Day- Wear a hat that's native to France, Spain, Mexico, China, etc. Most are homemade but could be purchased. Or, wear clothes that have the same color as the flag of your favorite foreign country. Be ready to describe the flag of your country. 5. Every year we pick a theme - Food Around the World, World Music, Animals of the World, Currency, and work with that theme. Students have designed stamps, currency, created songs, created a food label, etc. in target language. Dana, S. Re: Foreign Language Week. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 24 Feb 2007). --- A five-step plan for celebrating Foreign Language Week in your school is available at http://www.jc.edu/users/stevenso/FLAND/flwk.html . --- About.com has a page dedicated to foreign language week at http://french.about.com/library/bl-foreignlanguageweek.htm that includes links to About.com language-specific sites as well as general articles about the benefits of being multilingual. --- FLTEACH’s FAQ on how to celebrate Foreign Language Week is available at http://www.cortland.edu/flteach/FAQ/FAQ-FL-Week.html . --- The New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers has several resources available, including a poster and a flyer, at http://www.nysaflt.org/advocacy/index.htm . --- Here is the link to Alpha Mu Gamma’s site. Alpha Mu Gamma, a national collegiate foreign language honor society, inaugurated National Foreign Language Week 50 years ago. The history of the event, along with archived past years’ posters and an image of the 2007 poster, can be found at http://www.lacitycollege.edu/academic/honor/amg/nflw.htm .
