Title: Instructional Resources Teaching English, History and Social Science through Foreign Language
Body: From http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Instruction/Language/Resources/WRindex.html The Virginia Department of Education has completed an initiative to develop foreign language instructional activities with connections to English and/or history and social science. These instructional activities are sample lessons developed by foreign language teachers throughout the commonwealth and are intended to serve as models for various instructional strategies. They correlate the Standards of Learning for French, German, Latin, and Spanish with those in English and/or history and social science, and include instructional models for beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of foreign language study. The instructional activities are grouped by language and topic. Language levels and connections between the Standards of Learning are identified in each lesson, and each lesson can be adapted to meet the needs of the students. Additional Web resources include rubrics for evaluating performance in a foreign language and Web sites useful to foreign language teaching. For more information and links to the lessons and resources, go to http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Instruction/Language/Resources/WRindex.html .

Title: Goethe Website: The Power of Language
Body: This Goethe website is amassing a compendium of all things linguistic to gear up for an international language conference in Berlin this summer. Die Macht der Sprache (the power of language) includes contributions on language, identity, and multi-lingualism in Germany and Europe. This is no grammarian’s lair, but an entertaining and informative forum for discussions of language in everyday life. A few highlights are listed below: “He Alder, hassu Ei-Pott bei?” An introduction into the multi-lingual slang of young Germans from immigrant backgrounds Ger(man) – A Man’s Language? An Attempt at a “Sex Change” - a history of efforts to create a gender neutral German – not an easy task for a language in which every noun is assigned one of three genders! Pop Language: German A look at the history of German language pop music, with a link to an interesting film that explores differing viewpoints on proposals for a quota for German language songs on the radio. Title: Deutschland sucht den Superstar Listening Activity
Body: An AATG-L user wrote about the following activity: My AP students asked to watch "Deutschland sucht den Superstar" so I created the following activity: I downloaded four clips of DSDS off youtube (I recorded them with keepvid.com) - I used two good singers and two bad singers. The two good singers I used were "Francisca" and "Nico.” Then I created a very easy worksheet with the following questions: Wie heisst er/sie? Wie alt ist er/sie? Woher kommt er/sie? Persönliche Information: Welches Lied singt er/sie? Was sagt die Jury? ja / nein Kommentare von der Jury: First we discussed the format of "American Idol" (which I've never watched but the kids all had). Then I showed the clips and they wrote down the information and we compared our answers and the American and German versions of the show. I ended up using the activity in levels 2, 3, 4 and AP with equal success. Lechner, H. [AATG-L] Deutschland sucht den Superstar Listening Activity. Title: Electronic Resource: French Heritage Language Program
Body: The French Heritage Language Program website now offers a new “Teaching Resources” section, entirely dedicated to the teaching of heritage French and, to a certain extent, heritage languages in general. This section aims at providing heritage French teachers with the pedagogical guidelines and latest research that will help them respond to the needs, and highlight the strengths, of their students. It also provides a broad range of authentic materials that will prove particularly useful for lesson development around the cultural, social, economical and political realities of Francophone countries. Finally, this website is also a place to find information on the institutions of la Francophonie. Title: Activities for Places in a Town in French
Body: Does anybody have any creative ideas for teaching about French places in a town? La boulangerie, la poste, la bibliotheque, le stade, etc. Harington, C. French places in a town. Foreign Language Teachers Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 23 Feb 2007). --- Setting your classroom up as a model town is a great culminating activity after you have introduced and developed the vocabulary, structures and language functions (asking and answering questions, expressing likes and dislikes, use of descriptive adjectives, using euros, etc.) you have targeted in your ongoing instruction. Students move from one location to another "shopping" for goods and services while "storeowners" ask and answer related questions. Caccavale, T. Re: French places in a town. Foreign Language Teachers Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 23 Feb 2007). --- I do a mini-poster project, where they design and draw a town with several buildings labeled with appropriate content drawn (i.e. breads and pastries in the boulangerie-patisserie, etc) They must label at least 8 buildings, and also have to draw and label at least 4 streets with French names. Then they have to write out directions in French to go from Point A to Point B to Point C, and present this to the class, using a hotwheel car or little vehicle. Steriadis, M. Re: French places in a town. Foreign Language Teachers Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 23 Feb 2007). --- I have made a classroom set of index cards cut in half. On each half I glued a picture of a city building (la poste, la banque, la bibliotheque, l'aeorport, le theatre, le cinema, etc). I do several different activities with them for the students depending on what I am teaching. I use them for bingo games and for teaching preposition of location (a gauche de, a droite de , pres de, loin de , entre, etc.) I call out the sentence (La poste est a gauche de la banque) and the students must place the pictures accordingly on their desk tops. Then I have the students call out a sentence and the rest of the class places the cards accordingly. Lastly, I have the students select cards of their choice, place them on their desk tops and write a sentence in French describing where the buildings are in relation to each other. This I collect and have a look at to see how they are understanding the names of the buildings and the prepositions of location. Shipman, E. Re: French places in a town. Foreign Language Teachers Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 23 Feb 2007).
