The conference aims to bring together teacher educators from these many contexts to discuss and share research, theory, and best practices and to initiate and sustain meaningful professional dialogue across languages, levels, and settings. The conference will focus on four broad themes: I. Knowledge Base of Language Teacher Education II. Social, Cultural, and Political Contexts of Language Teacher Education III. Title: Gilman International Scholarship Application Now Open
Body: From http://www.iie.org//programs/gilman/index.html The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. Critical Need Languages include: * Arabic (all dialects) * Chinese (all dialects) * Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek) * Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki) * Indic (Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi) * Korean * Russian The Gilman Scholarship Program is now accepting applications from students participating in study abroad programs that take place during Fall 2007 or for Academic Year 07-08 study abroad programs. Title: Fulbright Teacher Exchange in Argentina for Administrators
Body: From http://www.fulbrightexchanges.org/View/ViewOtherOpps.asp Work with Administrator-colleagues in Argentina 2007-08 U.S. school administrators at the elementary, middle, and high school levels (principals, assistant principals, District-level administrators, etc.) are invited to apply for an opportunity to participate in a two-way Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program with Argentina. The program would begin with U.S. administrators hosting an Argentine administrator for three weeks in November 2007. U.S. administrators would then travel to Argentina for three weeks in July 2008 to work-shadow their exchange partner. Spanish fluency is preferred, but not required. DATES: 1) November 2007* –U.S. administrators host Argentine exchange partner for three weeks. 2) 13 July - 2 August, 2008 (tentative) -- U.S. administrators travel to Argentina for three weeks. *Specific dates to be determined AWARD: U.S. grantees on this program will receive round-trip economy airfare from the airport nearest grantee’s home and a cost of living stipend while in Argentina (airfare + living stipend = $3000), as well as orientation in Buenos Aires and home-stay with Argentine partner or other home-stay housing. Title: Instructor Positions: Arabic, Korean, Swahili, and Brazilian Portuguese
Body: The World Languages Academy at the University of Oregon invites applications for five language instructors: Arabic—2 (1.0 FTE), Korean—1 (1.0 FTE), Brazilian Portuguese—1 (.67 FTE) and Swahili—1 (.67 FTE). Starting date is September 17, 2007. Required qualities for the position include an MA in Language Teaching, Linguistics, Foreign Language Education or related field with at least one year of full-time university teaching or equivalent experience; a record of excellence in teaching; knowledge of current second-language teaching methodologies; ability and willingness to teach and direct introductory and intermediate courses in our respective languages; native or near-native fluency in Arabic, Korean, Portuguese or Swahili, as well as in English. Desired qualities for the position include: evidence of pedagogical/professional development, experience in developing language materials and curricula, and a desire to develop upper level courses in various aspects of language and culture. The successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds. These positions are renewable, and, depending upon future funding, eligible for promotion to Senior Instructor. A normal teaching load is 3 courses per term (15 hours per week). The starting salary is between $30,000 and $35,000 for nine months, based on experience and qualifications. Summer teaching is a possibility, and the university provides an excellent benefits package. Review of applications will begin March 15, 2007. Positions will remain open until filled.
