Title: New Book: English-Only Instruction and Immigrant Students in Secondary Schools
Body: From http://tinyurl.com/29m3x4 English-Only Instruction and Immigrant Students in Secondary Schools: A Critical Examination by Lee Gunderson published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2007 This book is for teachers, teacher educators, school and district administrators, policy makers, and researchers who want to know about literacy, cultural diversity, and students who speak little or no English. The studies reported are part of a large longitudinal study of about 25,000 immigrant students in a district in which the policy is English-only instruction. These studies: *provide multiple views of the students’ lives and their success in schools where the language of instruction differs from the languages they speak with their friends and families; *explore the students’ views of teaching and learning; *describe the potential differences between the students views and those of their teachers; *look at issues related to students’ views of their identities as they work, study, and socialize in a new environment; and *examine different reading models designed to facilitate the learning of English as a second language (ESL). Educators and researchers will find the descriptions of students’ simultaneous learning of English and of academic content relevant to their view of whether instruction should be English only or bilingual. For teachers who view multicultural education as an important endeavor, this book may on occasion surprise them and at other times confirm their views. The author does not attempt to develop a particular political viewpoint about which approach works best with immigrant students. Rather, the objective of the studies was to develop a full, rich description of the lives of immigrant high school students enrolled in classes where the medium of instruction is English. The reader is left to evaluate the results. For more information or to order this book, visit the publisher’s site at http://tinyurl.com/29m3x4 .

Title: Call for Papers: Academic Exchange Quarterly
Body: From http://rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/5sec.htm Academic Exchange Quarterly Fall 2007, Volume 11, Issue 3 special section dedicated to Elementary and Secondary Education Focus: Significant challenges face educators as we enter the first decade of the 21st century. High-stakes testing and the standards movement present challenges to teachers, administrators, students, and parents as each group seeks ways to successfully navigate through the consequences of policy decisions in education. Curriculum issues capture our attention as we struggle with questions of authenticity, standards, interdisciplinary and integrated approaches to teaching and learning, and content specific curriculum. Policy decisions including the connection to teaching and learning to assessment and high-stakes testing and professional development present opportunities for active exploration for teachers and researchers. Literacy issues focusing on reading and writing across the curriculum and reading and writing workshop environments provide important K-12 opportunities to contribute to a vital professional conversation. To be most helpful, empirical studies should be clear in both methodology and style providing opportunities for study replication. Qualitative studies must be grounded in theoretical and methodological studies. All papers should be clearly presented. Who May Submit: Submissions are welcome from researchers, teacher action researchers, administrators and graduate students as well as others engaged directly in teaching at the elementary, middle, or secondary levels. Submission deadline: any time until the end of May 2007 For more information, visit http://rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/5sec.htm .

Title: Call for Papers: Open Source in Education and Language Learning Online
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-588.html Open Source in Education and Language Learning Online (COSELLO) Special Theme: The problem of language learning online - Is Moodle the answer? September 28-29, 2007 Reykjavik, Iceland This conference is the final event in a two-year European project (Covcell), aimed at supporting language learning and teaching in an online environment by adding tools which support collaboration and cooperation to the functionalities already provided by the Moodle learning management system. As well as showcasing the collaborative tools developed by the project, the conference seeks to address critical issues in the field of online language learning from two perspectives: (1) the pedagogical perspective of the effectiveness of cohort-oriented, task-based approaches to language learning and teaching in an online environment; (2) the technical perspective of open source development of tools which support online language learning and teaching. We therefore welcome papers in either of these two domains: (1) papers concerning current issues in the pedagogy of online language learning and teaching, especially the effectiveness of approaches that allow students to learn language while collaborating on tasks in cohort-supported environments; (2) papers concerning the development of open source tools which support language learning and teaching in an online environment and especially the suitability of such tools for use with established open-source learning management systems such as Moodle. Papers that address the special theme of the effectiveness of Moodle for language learning and teaching are particularly welcome. For more information, go to http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-588.html .
