Title: Fulbright Teacher Exchange in Uruguay
Body: From http://www.fulbrightexchanges.org/View/ViewOtherOpps.asp Uruguay Summer Program - 2007 The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program is currently seeking elementary school teachers or elementary school administrators with proficiency in Spanish and strong cross-cultural skills to share teaching methodologies and best practices in Uruguay for four weeks in Summer 2007. DATES: July 16 – August 11, 2007. AWARD: Round-trip economy airfare from airport nearest grantee’s home, plus $100/week cost of living stipend while in Uruguay, $500 given to each grantee to purchase and send educational materials to use for teaching and then leave with the schools; orientation, mid-term session, and debriefing in Montevideo; and supplemental health insurance. U.S. participants will stay at hotels, double-occupancy. In addition, the Fulbright Commission in Uruguay will pay for in-country travel, and accommodations/activities related to the orientation and workshops in Montevideo. The Department of State Critical Language Scholarships will provide funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students to participate in beginning, intermediate and/or advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners. Recipients of these scholarships will be expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their professional careers. We seek candidates who are native or near-native signers of ASL. Candidates should either be ASLTA certified or working towards such certification. Experience teaching ASL at the post-secondary level is required. Candidates who hold an MA in linguistics, ASL studies, psychology, education, or a related field are preferred. Candidates should be committed to excellence in teaching. Responsibilities include establishment of a new beginning and intermediate level ASL program at UW; teaching two undergraduate classes per quarter in ASL and Deaf Culture; evaluation of students for placement within the program; commitment to program enrichment, including all activities related to teaching and advising; and working with Language Learning Center staff on the development of resources for ASL classes. The Coordinator will also be instrumental in the development of a new Center for Languages and International Communication. He or she will support the teaching mission of the language-related departments within the College of Arts and Sciences and will be instrumental in integrating technology in the teaching of languages. Duties will include working with faculty to introduce, guide, and manage departmental technology initiatives, and supporting faculty in the training of teaching assistants. Coordinating language instructors will also be part of the required duties. In addition, the Coordinator will be involved in administrative tasks related to language instruction (e.g., advisement, placement examinations, proficiency certification) and activities that promote an interest in language study. Demonstrable experience with the interface between the fields of language pedagogy and information technology is highly desirable. As a lecturer, the Coordinator will also be expected to organize and offer pedagogical workshops and to teach two credit-bearing, language-related courses per year. A high level of proficiency in one or more of the languages supported by the College of Arts and Sciences is expected. Interest in translation is a “plus”. Body: Yoruba, Zulu and Swahili Instructors -- Summer 2007 Pending sufficient course enrollments, the UCLA James S. Coleman African Studies Center seeks short-term instructors in Yoruba, Zulu and Swahili for the Language Intensives in LA program during Summer Session 2007 (25 June to 17 August). One instructor will teach Introductory Yoruba and one will teach Intermediate Yoruba; Swahili and Zulu will be at the Introductory level. Classes meet 8:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Job duties will include teaching, lesson planning, writing exams and quizzes, grading student work, arranging for guest speakers, and participating in field trips (some of which may take place outside of class time). Candidates must be available to participate in training sessions both before and during the Summer Session. Employment will be for the Summer Session only. Applicants should have teaching experience and a degree in a relevant discipline. (M.A. or other advanced degree preferred.) Experience with university students in the United States is a plus. Candidates should speak Yoruba, Zulu or Swahili at the Superior proficiency level or beyond, and also have strong English skills.
