Supporters rally to save German at SOU
Administrators have received so much feedback about impending cuts that they've delayed finalizing them until March 12

German teachers from across Oregon and other advocates of the language have decried Southern Oregon University's plan to eliminate German as a major — mounting a letter-writing campaign and challenging the justification for the proposed cut.

"If this decision is not reversed, Southern Oregon University will be the first (Oregon University System) institution to eliminate the teaching of one of the most important languages of the 21st century," wrote Christian Stehr, an Oregon State University German professor spearheading the effort.

German is one of three majors, along with geography and geology, marked for elimination at SOU as the university struggles to deal with an ongoing budget shortage. Basic classes in all three programs will remain.
