Body: Greetings all, I'm writing to announce the availability of a series of new web-based audio/ video groups that I'm calling "LetsTalk" discussion forums. Teachers and students of ESL/EFL at secondary level (age 13) and above are invited to participate. All skill levels, beginning to advanced, are welcomed. Title: Summer institute: Khmer, Lao, Hmong, Vietnamese
Body: For more information: https://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/seassi/heritage The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) will offer 8-week intensive summer Heritage language and culture classes in Khmer, Lao, Hmong and Vietnamese. The classes will take place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, from June 13 to August 5, 2005. These classes are intended for university students of Hmong, Lao, Cambodian and Vietnamese ethnic background who grew up in North America and can speak/understand the language of their Southeast Asian culture (to at least a minimal degree) and would like to learn to read and write their language as well. Body: "Putting the Pieces Together" Northwest Conference on Special Education and Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Interface Date: Friday, December 10, 2004 Place: Lewis and Clark College, Portland OR The conference brings together K-12 educational personnel to focus on the challenges of correctly identifying culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students for special education services - considering questions of pre-referral, intervention, and referral processes. The conference is designed to accommodate school teams, which might include classroom teachers, special educators or ESL specialists, and administrators. There are three all-day strands, with a wrap-up session at the end, allowing school teams to specialize and then come together to share learning. Title: Job Posting: Vietnamese Specialist/Lecturer, MN
Body: The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota is seeking applications for a teaching specialist or lecturer position to teach Vietnamese language courses. As a first step in initiating a Vietnamese language program, we are looking for a candidate who will teach a two-semester accelerated course for heritage speakers. If filled, this position would be 33% time from August 29, 2005 to May 28, 2006. The appointment is annually renewable depending upon departmental need, continued availability of funding, and satisfactory performance. Responsibilities of this position are to teach assigned language classes/ sections; keep office hours; prepare course materials; prepare and grade exams; and participate in program governance as appropriate. Required qualifications: B.A. degree, or foreign equivalent; native or near- native fluency in Vietnamese; strong English language communication skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills. Preferred qualifications: M.A. or Ph.D., or foreign equivalent; some experience teaching Vietnamese language. Applicants holding the Ph.D. would be hired as Lecturer. Applicants with the B.A. or M.A. would be hired as Teaching Specialist. Body: School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University POSITION: ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR PROGRAM: FOREIGN AND SECOND LANGUAGE EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctorate in Foreign and Second Language Education or the equivalent and three years successful foreign language teaching in elementary or secondary schools or the equivalent are required. Record of research and scholarship in second language education, experience in teaching graduate students, experience in working in teacher education programs emphasizing multidisciplinary approaches at professional development sites are all preferred. Candidate must have 3 years K-12 experience in FL/Heritage Language/Bilingual/Bicultural education. Knowledge of languages spoken by key language minority groups (i.e. Spanish, Somali, South East Asian languages) and experiences in other cultures is valued. Research and scholarly focus in urban settings, and infusing multi-racial, multi-cultural, and multilingual perspectives into teacher education programs is also preferred. DUTIES: Teach graduate courses and advise graduate students in MA, PhD, TESOL endorsement, and post-degree MEd Programs in Foreign and Second Language Education. Collaborate with schools in an integrated K-12 teacher licensure program at professional development sites. Solicit extramural funding and participate in a substantial program of research and scholarship. Contribute to scholarship and program development on meeting the needs of a variety of students in diverse settings. Engage in service and governance activities both within and outside the University.
