Title: Culture plays a role in dyslexia
Body: Full article available at: http://www.forbes.com/lifestyle/health/feeds/hscout/2004/09/01/ hscout520983.html A new study reveals that cultural factors influence how dyslexia manifests itself by finding that the disorder affects the brains of Chinese and English speakers differently. "Our findings argue against a simple biological unit theory of dyslexia," said the study's corresponding author, Lihai Tan, a research fellow at the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health and associate professor of linguistics at the University of Hong Kong. "Dyslexia is part of culture." Gardner, A. Culture plays a role in dyslexia. http://www.forbes.com/lifestyle/ health/feeds/hscout/2004/09/01/hscout520983.html (1 Sep. 2004).

Title: France promotes language learning in EU
Body: Full article available at: http://www.euobserver.com/?sid=9&aid=17247 The French Foreign Ministry yesterday announced the three-year plan, designed, they say, to promote the language in the 10 new EU member states as well as Bulgaria and Romania. Each wave of enlargement in the European Union in recent decades has resulted in an increase in the prominence of English in Europe, often to the detriment of French. Indeed, the number of European Commissioners from the new member states who speak Russian is said to be more than those who speak French. Beatty, A. France to train 2000 in fight to promote language. http:// www.euobserver.com/?sid=9&aid=17247 (9 Oct. 2004).

Title: Students of Arabic in US double
Body: Prompted partially by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the number of students at U.S. colleges who are enrolled in Arabic language courses nearly doubled from late 1998 through 2002. It's the fastest growth rate for any foreign language during that period and there's no sign that interest is waning. About 100 Americans traveled to rural Vermont this summer to study Arabic in one of the world's best-known language programs. Kuo, K. Number of Arabic language students nearly doubles in US. http:// www.voanews.com/article.cfm?objectID=3639A010-EB4B-4C9D- B998DA1B7479B6F4 (25 Aug. 2004).
