Title: Book Review: Response to Student Writing
Body: Complete review available at: http://linguistlist.org/issues/15/15-2964.html Title: Response to Student Writing Subtitle: Implications for Second Language Students Published: 2003 Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates Author: Dana R. Ferris This volume synthesizes and critically analyzes the literature on response to the writing of second language students, and discusses the implications of the research for teaching practice in the areas of written and oral teacher commentary on student writing, error correction, and facilitation of peer response. The book features numerous examples of student texts and teacher commentary, as well as figures and appendices that summarize research findings and present sample lessons and other teaching materials. It is thus simultaneously comprehensive in its approach to the existing research and highly practical in showing current and future teachers how this material applies to their everyday endeavors of responding to student writing and teaching composition classes.

Title: United Germany's role in Europe
Body: Complete article available at: http://www.germany-info.org/relaunch/info/publications/week/2004/041015/ politics3.html Earlier this month, Germans marked the 14th anniversary of their country's unification, and next month, they will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Markus Meckel was a key player in both of those momentous occasions. The deputy foreign policy spokesman for the ruling Social Democrats in the Bundestag lower house of parliament, Meckel boasts a remarkable political career that began before the fall of the Berlin Wall as part of the protestant community's demonstrations against the communist regime in East Germany. After the fall of the Wall, Meckel was part of the founding of the Social Democratic Party in eastern Germany and was elected to the first freely- elected parliament there. During this transitional period before unification, he served as East German Foreign Minister. Since unification, he has been a member of the Bundestag with a special interest in foreign and security policy. TWIG recently asked Meckel about the challenges that Germany faces 14 years after unification.
