Title: Hispanic students behind academically
Body: The article begins: Denver's first Summit on Latino Academic Achievement began with grim statistics about the progress of Hispanic children in U.S. schools and ended with a call to action to local business leaders. Federico Peña, the former Denver mayor and Clinton Cabinet official, threw out a challenge - and two big numbers - in his talk to about 300 education, civic and business leaders gathered at a downtown hotel. The article goes on to describe Peña's appeal to the business world to invest in schools and how the US' comparatively smaller investment in education impacts Hispanic students and the nation as a whole. Mitchell, N, Peña cites crisis, issues challenge: Summit on Latino academics conveys a sense of urgency. http://insidedenver.com/drmn/education/article/ 0,1299,DRMN_957_3269852,00.html (21Oct. 2004).

Title: Cable program teaches Spanish to kids
Body: Full article available at: http://www.boston.com/news/education/k_12/articles/2004/10/21/ cable_program_picks_up_where_schools_leave_off/ The article begins: ''Como estas?" ''How are you?" Kiera Campbell, a former Arlington Spanish teacher, asked four Arlington elementary school students who were seated with her on the set of the local cable public access studio. ''Bien," said Ysabela Campbell-Breen, 6, Campbell's daughter, and a Bishop School first-grader. ''But I'm also hot!" Despite the heat from the television lights, the young students didn't wilt during the recording of one of the first installments of ''Hola Arlington!" a new Spanish language instruction program premiering on Comcast community cable this month. The article continues to describe features of and community involvement in the program, which was created to fill the gap left when elementary language classes were cut. Gurley, G. Title: Mexican students learn by satellite TV
Body: Full article available at: http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/1021/p01s02-woam.html ATLIHUETZIA, MEXICO – It's Monday, a school morning, and 14-year-old Manuel Damian is glued to the television. He's not playing hooky and he isn't feeling ill. In fact, the ninth-grader is sitting quietly in class, his blue school sweater buttoned up against the chilly mountain air. Today, fully 1 in 5 Mexicans in seventh, eighth, and ninth grade attends TV junior high. In fact, it could very well be the future of midlevel public education in Mexico - and in many parts of the world, including parts of the US. Thanks to their extremely low costs, coupled with tight school budgets and soaring student populations, Mexico's telesecondaries have become a model for providing education to all students, even as questions about their effectiveness persist. Bensinger, K. Mexico's answer to tight school budgets: teaching by TV. http:// www.csmonitor.com/2004/1021/p01s02-woam.html (21 Oct. 2004).

Title: Job Posting: Visiting Director of Language Center, Cyprus
Body: The University of Cyprus offers the post of Visiting Director of the Language Center. The contract will be made for one or two years during which time this post will be advertised as a full position. While an application of the successful visitor for the full position will of course be considered very favourably if both sides get along well, there will be made no promises of any sorts. The full position will be an academic appointment with a renewable contract at the level of Associate or Full Professor, depending on qualifications. This means that the successful applicant must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline. The same requirement holds for the current advertisement for a Visiting Director of the Language Center. The starting date will be as soon as preferably, ideally in January or February of 2005. Among the expected tasks to be accomplished is setting up the Language Center in a dynamic environment: the University of Cyprus, the only public university in the Republic of Cyprus, is currently in its thirteenth year of existence and the Language Center has recently been established as an autonomous institution within the Faculty of Humanities alongside the Departments of English Studies, French and Modern Languages, and Turkish Studies. The University of Cyprus is also currently building a new campus which will eventually house the entire institution. One of the future facilities will be a state-of-the-art Learning Center where the Computer Center, the Library, and the Language Center will find a home. Another prime task of te Visiting Director will thus be to supervise and engage in the preparations for construction, incl. all infrastructure. Further tasks include course management (within the University of Cyprus and outside to the public), training and managing language teachers (incl. hiring, promoting, and educating further), teaching one class per semester (in one of the three departments of the Faculty of Humanities), and others. The languages currently taught at the University of Cyprus alongside Greek (which is independent of the Language Center) are Turkish, English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian, with Russian starting next academic year. Working knowledge of Greek is expected of the full appointment of Director of the Language Center, so that the Visitor ideally has some command of Greek or is willing and able to achieve this within his or her appointment. The appointment to Visiting Director of the Language Center will be made at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with a competitive salary. Since we are working on a tight schedule, all applications arriving by November 10 will be considered. Please submit a CV in electronic form to Dr. Kleanthes Grohmann, the Interim Director of the Language Center. Title: Call for Papers: Language Change in South Asia
Body: For more information: http://linguistlist.org/issues/15/15-2937.html The last decade has seen unprecedented growth in the study of language contact, shift and variations associated partly with the linguistic effects of globalization and increased migration all over the world. Language change and shift are culturally normal, and all combinations of known languages can be heard in rural contexts, with language choice in daily communication being based foremost on traditional language protocol. It is argued that variation is common in this geographical area, conceding that shift can also occur, but that the idea of a linguistic area is certainly fundamental to the notion of diffusion. More than three hundred languages are spoken in South Asia, more than in any other region of the world. Many of these languages are however only dialects of a parent language. Language attitude examines the way external factors have influenced and are influencing language change, focusing on how changing social contexts are reflected in language use. Language change explores the attitudes, values and assumptions that shape the way we use language. Focus in this study may also be given to looks at how language change operates within different genres. Selected papers will address how social, geographical, economic, cultural, educational or gender factors influence language variation and change. Analyzing social discourse would give us an idea that in what way language is used in the world of social discourse. Written over a decade on the South Asian Linguistics by many leading scholars cover a broad range of topics. Offering a sociolinguistic perspective on language contact, shift and variations, this volume will present a broader spectrum in understanding the complex linguistics phenomena of South Asia.
