Title: Call for Papers: NCOLTCL
Body: The Journal of the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages (NCOLCTL) is soliciting articles for publication. As the official journal of the Council, the journal serves the professional interests of teachers, researchers, and administrators of less commonly taught languages in all settings and all levels of instruction. The Journal is refereed and published once a year. Articles dealing with all aspects of less commonly taught languages are welcome, with preference given to articles dealing with educational and policy research, classroom innovation, and program development, sustenance, and advocacy. While articles focusing on specific less commonly taught languages are welcome, to be accepted the article must be framed within the overall context of less commonly taught language education, thereby insuring that all our readers are benefited, and honoring the founding principle of the Council, "collective solutions to common problems." In preparing the manuscript, please use the latest edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). Manuscripts should be a maximum of 25 pages (excluding references, charts, notes, etc.) and preferably submitted electronically via email attachment. Double-space the manuscript throughout, including notes, references, and tables, using 12- point font with a 1.5 inch left margin. The manuscript should be accompanied by a 150 word (or less) abstract and a cover sheet containing the manuscript title, name, address, office and home telephone numbers, fax number, email address, and full names and institutions of each author. Because the manuscript will be blind reviewed, identifying information should be on the title page only, and not appear in the manuscript. The submission deadline is November 30, 2004. Title: Day of the Dead celebration in Eugene
Body: Aqui les mando la invitación del Día de Muertos. Todos estan invitados, habrá tamalitos y café. Armando Morales Oak Hill School, in conjunction with MEChA, Adelante Sí, Casa de la Cultura de Guanajuato, and Dirección de Atención a Comunidades Guanajuatenses en el extranjero, Springfield High School and Casa Guanajuato from Eugene, Oregon, Presenta "La Muerte de Cartón y Azúcar" in celebration of the Tenth Annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), Monday, November 1, 2004, 7:00 p.m. You are invited to an evening of music by Grupo La Catrina, artwork, poetry and refreshments, at Oak Hill School. Professional artist, Jesús Pastor, from Guanajuato Mexico will explain the traditional significance of remembrance through paper-mache, sugar toys and sacred foods. Come join us for this free cultural event, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the foyer. This evening of celebration and dialogue begins the annual Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda Exhibition, commemorating Dia de los Muertos, which originated thousands of years ago in Southern Mexico where Mayans, Zapotecas, Mixtecas and Aztecas honored their dead through elaborate ceremonies, dances, and rituals. In the 16th century, when Cortez introduced Catholocism and seized control of Mexico, All Saints Day and All Souls Day coincided with the indigenous celebrations. Altars of food, art, candles, flowers and photographs of the dead immediately appeared alongside images of the saints. On November 1, souls of the dead children come back to visit their homes. On November 2, the souls of deceased adults return. Families ignite strips of firecrackers to help guide their children home. In some villages, yellow petals of marigolds (the flower of the dead from pre-Hispanic times) mark a bright path leading from the graveyard. Bring your classes to tour the Ofrenda Exhibit, and to discuss the history and tradition behind the celebration. The 45-minute tour will include a viewing of the altar and display. The exhibition will be on display until Friday, Nov.5th. OAK HILL SCHOOL is located at 86397 Eastway Drive in Eugene's south hills next to Lane Community College. Contact Armando Morales at 541.744.0954 x125 or email at for more information. Villanueva, A. Dia de los muertos 11-1-04 Eugene OR. (26 Oct. 2004).
