| Title | United Germany's role in Europe |
| Body | Complete article available at: http://www.germany-info.org/relaunch/info/publications/week/2004/041015/ politics3.html Earlier this month, Germans marked the 14th anniversary of their country's unification, and next month, they will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Markus Meckel was a key player in both of those momentous occasions. The deputy foreign policy spokesman for the ruling Social Democrats in the Bundestag lower house of parliament, Meckel boasts a remarkable political career that began before the fall of the Berlin Wall as part of the protestant community's demonstrations against the communist regime in East Germany. After the fall of the Wall, Meckel was part of the founding of the Social Democratic Party in eastern Germany and was elected to the first freely- elected parliament there. During this transitional period before unification, he served as East German Foreign Minister. Since unification, he has been a member of the Bundestag with a special interest in foreign and security policy. TWIG recently asked Meckel about the challenges that Germany faces 14 years after unification. |
