Title | Goethe Website: The Power of Language |
Body | This Goethe website is amassing a compendium of all things linguistic to gear up for an international language conference in Berlin this summer. Die Macht der Sprache (the power of language) includes contributions on language, identity, and multi-lingualism in Germany and Europe. This is no grammarian’s lair, but an entertaining and informative forum for discussions of language in everyday life. A few highlights are listed below: “He Alder, hassu Ei-Pott bei?” An introduction into the multi-lingual slang of young Germans from immigrant backgrounds Ger(man) – A Man’s Language? An Attempt at a “Sex Change” - a history of efforts to create a gender neutral German – not an easy task for a language in which every noun is assigned one of three genders! Pop Language: German A look at the history of German language pop music, with a link to an interesting film that explores differing viewpoints on proposals for a quota for German language songs on the radio.
