Listening comprehension is the most important and yet most difficult skill that foreign language learners need. Participants consider: (a) the role of listening comprehension in language learning, (b) the definition of listening, (c) the process of listening, (d) similarities and differences between listening and reading, (e) role of reading while listening, (f) kinds of listening tasks, (g) text characteristics, (h) setting goals and purposes for listening. Participants will apply these concepts in planning for a listening task and consider teaching strategies to promote development of listening skills.
