Title: Substitute Teacher Plans
Body: If you ever have a substitute coming who may not speak the target language, this simple lesson plan may come in handy. ---- One of the best activities I have for a substitute where I can be out at any time in the year and don't have a substitute that speaks my target language is: Prepare a list of about 30-50 words in the target language for each group of about 4 kids. I have a large tub of old magazines that I collect throughout the school year from other teachers who want to donate to it. The kids are put in groups and go on a magazine scavenger hunt. They must find their words (each group has a different list), cut the words out of the magazine, glue them on butcher paper and label the words in the target language. I leave instructions for the substitute to leave about 10 minutes or so for clean-up. When I come back there is a ready made picture file of words that I can use for bulletin boards, posters, flash cards, etc... The kids enjoy looking for the words and it does take up the entire class. You need about 5-7 magazines per group, scissors for each group, glue, markers and the list. I generally list items such as: "a girl in a red dress", "a woman in a red dress", "a surprised man", "an angry man", etc. The kids can use their textbooks or dictionaries to look up words they may not remember/know. I generally suggest having 1 person be the group leader who tells the others what to look for, 2 kids to cut the pictures out and glue them and 1 student to label them all. Michie, P. Title: Peer Tutoring Program Suggestion
Body: This idea from a German teacher could be useful with any multi-level language program for learners of high school age and above. ---- Last week I started something I've always wanted to have: a Peer Tutoring Program in German. I asked my German National Honor Society students who among them would be interested (I also had it announced during the morning announcements since I don't see all my students this semester). I had told the GNHS students that participating in the PTP was something else they could put on their college applications (since I have many seniors). I had six students who were interested. One came after school Friday to help one of my German I boys who had been out sick for 2 weeks. My peer tutor was wonderful! He worked with the student for 35 mins. in my room while I entered grades. I could hear what he was saying and could have intervened, if necessary, but it wasn't. It was wonderful not only for me to be able to catch up, but also for my GNHS student to be helping my German I boy and doing such an excellent job of it. Haring, C. [AATG-L] Peer Tutoring Program. Title: Household Vocabulary Practice Ideas
Body: I do a "design your dream home" project when learning rooms of the house and things that go in them. And for the chores, I've had students do videos with two choices: 1) they design a cleaning service (they've done funny personas like "The Rockin Elvis' cleaning service" 2) They are having a party and their parents call them from the airport. They're coming home early and the kids are trying to designate chores to each person to get the house clean in time. Kasic, A.J. Re: la casa. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. Title: Resources for Heritage Language Teachers
Body: You may already be familiar with the SALRC (South Asian Language Resource Center) at the University of Chicago, but I wanted to share a resource that may be useful in addressing the challenges of teaching heritage learners of non-western languages in particular. "SALRC sponsored a pre-conference symposium prior to the 25th meeting of the South Asian Language Analysis (SALA) roundtable, held at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, between September 16-18, 2005. Invited speakers presented papers on the theme of the symposium - Heritage Learners: Overcoming Curricular Challenges." Summaries of the papers and links to the authors can be found on the SALRC website. http://salrc.uchicago.edu/workshops/sponsored/091605 http://www.linguistics.uiuc.edu/sala25/preschedule.htm Lentz, U.
