Title: More Day of the Dead Service Learning Project Ideas
Body: We did something similar at our school. We called ours the Festival de los Muertos and is more of an open-house, come-and-go event. We advertise in the paper and on the news. Sp III and IV are the "event staff' who hand out programs explaining the holidays and where everything is located. They got to design the shirts and were so excited to have 'event staff' on the back. Students in other classes were asking about the shirts so we sold to the entire school. We have done this for three years and each year we find a way to get more the school involved. Each Spanish class does something in their room. For example, lower levels do a calavera and Level II writes a composition talking about what their loved one was like. We put it on a calavera template from the 'Dia de los Muertos' booklet from Smart as a Fox. Each student in Levels III and IV constructs an ofrenda in the library and they write bilingual desciptions on index cards telling why they included the items they chose. Spanish Club made calaveras de azucar and Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica did interactive bilingual storytelling. Home Ec made Pan de Muerto y Atole, among other items. The art department did projects which they had on display, and the art students did face painting where they would paint the children's faces as happy calaveras. (I had to stress this to many of the art kids...no scary skulls! This is not Halloween!) All the classes make papel picado and we string this up through the halls. We have a booth where the kids can make flowers from tissue paper as well. We had a community member from Mexico come in and show the drama department how to do the Danza de los Viejitos, but we didn't have the masks so it didn't have its full efect. Title: Recommended Fiction Titles for Older English Learners
Body: How about Great Illustrated Classics: Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley? This is the original story of a monster created from dead bodies. Both the scientist and the creature suffer a lot but there is an illustration on practically every page. I don't know if this action would be offensive to some groups. How about The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency, by Alexander McCall Smith? The story concerns a woman in an African country who opens the first agency ever operated by a woman. There are no guns or murderers in this novel and some of the chapters can be skipped if it seems too long. Another book is A Long Way from Chicago, by Richard Peck. This is the story of a brother and sister from Chicago who spend a week every summer visiting their grandmother, who lives in a small country town during the Depression. Grandmother is not very traditional and the story is very funny. Albers, M. Re: Selecting texts for high school ESL students. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. King Jordan. Jordan was scheduled to be on the program but decided not to participate due to the escalating crisis at Gallaudet. (Read his statement.) The show examines the importance of Gallaudet to the deaf community. Instant captioning was made available on the Web, and the show included members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community who e-mailed and called in. Title: From Silence to Sound: Cognition and Language Planning in the International Education of Prelingually Deaf Students
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-3037.html From Silence to Sound: Cognition and Language Planning in the International Education of Prelingually Deaf Students Author: Patrick William Seamans Dissertation Abstract: This dissertation is focused on the very essence of the field and philosophy of Linguistics -- the inital transition from mimetic to phonocentric functioning that occurs to all human beings with normal hearing and listening ability, but which does not occur independently to persons who are prelingually bilaterally deaf (deafened in both ears before becoming fully phonocentric, usually around age 2.5). This dissertation also includes a full review of recent neuroscientific literature in regard to acquisition of phonocentric thought and functioning in human beings. Due to the development and dissemination of the modern and recent cochlear implant technololgies, it has only recently become known, through neuroscience research, as to how the auditory system actually operates, and how born-mimetic humans become phonocentric. This research study identifies critical issues regarding the treatment and education of the prelingually deaf, for international education administrators, policy planners and government officials. An introductory overview demonstrates that all humans are innately mimetic, and that most humans become phonocentric automatically and unconsciously, but the prelingually deaf require early affirmative and appropriate assistance to become naturally phonocentric and to think in phonological natural language.
