Title: Funding Opportunity: Newberry Library Summer Seminar
Body: From http://www.newberry.org/research/revolutions.html Revolution and the Making of Identities: France and Haiti, 1787-1804 June 19-July 21, 2006 The Newberry Library invites college and university teachers nationwide to apply for the Engraving depicting free blacks of Santo-Domingo (Haiti) wearing European dress, circa 17912006 summer seminar, Revolution and the Making of Identities: France and Haiti, 1787-1804. This 5-week seminar led by Jeremy Popkin (University of Kentucky) will use the concept of identity as a focus for the study of these two revolutionary processes. This comparative approach will bring new perspectives to our understanding of these movements on the two sides of the Atlantic, and to processes of social and cultural change more generally. Through discussion of common readings taken from primary sources, modern scholarly studies, and works of fiction about of these revolutions (almost all of them in English), we will explore the ways in which this notion of revolution as a process of change in individual identities opens new perspectives for understanding these dramatic upheavals that marked the beginning of the modern era in the western world. We will look at how those involved in these revolutions came to think of themselves as citizens, and what this meant in their lives; we will also examine how old identities were stigmatized and dissolved, and how opponents of the revolutionary movements were singled out. Readings will address changes in racial identification, gender roles, and religious identities. Successful applicants will receive a stipend of $3,600 to help defray travel and housing expenses. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, 1 March 2006. For more information, visit http://www.newberry.org/research/revolutions.html .

Title: Recommendations for Teachers of Students with ADD
Body: Struggling with class management after the holiday break? These suggestions for teaching students with Attention Deficit Disorder might prove useful in a variety of situations. ---- Remember that these kids have trouble following directions in their first language! So they have an even tougher time with second language instructions. Change activities every 7-8 minutes. Know that transitions take a while. Plan activities that allow for some movement. Be very structured in routines, rehearse with clear expectations and consistent, logical, natural consequences. Deal with the behavior then make it "ancient history." What works for one kid may not help another, and what works one day may flop the next. Check with other teachers to see what's working for them - or not. Some of my kids are so much fun, so enthusiastic once they're "reined in" a little. For all my classes I track daily on a little form what I call "school skills," and it's 20% of the grade. They must be on time, prepared with materials and HW, engaged in classwork as expected, and they must follow the rules of the classroom. I present it as a very positive thing, a way to improve their performance, their learning, and their grades. Broomall, B. Re: Teaching ADD students in the FL classroom.
