Title: Texas Foreign Language Education Conference
Body: From http://studentorgs.utexas.edu/flesa/texflec TexFLEC 2006: Language, Culture, and Identity: Interweaving Pathways in Second/Foreign Language Education Keynote speakers: Dr. George Braine (Chinese University of Hong Kong) & Dr. Yasuko Kanno (University of Washington) TexFLEC 2006 will be held on March 24 & 25, 2006. Our theme this year is the exploration of issues regarding multiculturalism and identity in second or foreign language learning and teaching. The core goal of the conference is to encourage critical thinking in issues of identity, culture, and language and to promote interdisciplinary research in the field of Foreign Language Education. The Texas Foreign Language Education Conference (TexFLEC) was first held in 2000 at the University of Texas at Austin. It aims to be an annual conference that brings together researchers and educators in the fields of foreign language education, TEFL/TESL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language or Second Language), linguistics, and applied linguistics. TexFLEC also aims to encourage professionalism and research starting at the grass roots. As such, graduate students are encouraged to begin making a contribution to their field by presenting, participating and attending the conference.TexFLEC is hosted by the Foreign Language Education Student Association (FLESA) at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin with support from the Foreign Language Education (FLE) Program. FLESA is an organization of approximately 100 graduate students in UT's Foreign Language Education Program, which offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Foreign Language Education with concentrations in applied linguistics, foreign language teaching, and TEFL/TESL. Title: Outdoor Activity Ideas
Body: Whether the cold weather has you dreaming of spring, or you're lucky enough to be in a warm place, these ideas for outdoor language practice might be useful soon. ---- The fire department has always been a wonderful learning experience and a great opportunity for vocabulary. However, since you are in Brazil, and the national language is different, walking through gardens, beaches and parks would be a great experience for the students. I recommend that you make these trips beforehand and write up vocabularly cards or sheets to help them with the experience. Wald, B. Outdoor activities. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (31 Dec. 2005). ---- here are a few ideas: - vocabulary games with balls - vocabulary games where everyone sits in a large circle on the ground clapping a rhythm - racing-type games with pairs of students, one of whom is giving instructions to the other (perhaps blindfolded) to complete a set of tasks or overcome some obstacles - treasure-hunt activities- either of a nature variety or with items the teacher has planted on the school grounds - group-organizing/task activities like building a playhouse for the pre-schoolers or painting a mural on a side wall - lessons in English in an physical activity like rock-wall climbing, Tai Chi, etc. Spelleri, M.
