TitleRecommendations for Teachers of Students with ADD
BodyStruggling with class management after the holiday break? These suggestions for teaching students with Attention Deficit Disorder might prove useful in a variety of situations.

----

Remember that these kids have trouble following directions in their first language! So they have an even tougher time with second language instructions. Change activities every 7-8 minutes. Know that transitions take a while. Plan activities that allow for some movement. Be very structured in routines, rehearse with clear expectations and consistent, logical, natural consequences. Deal with the behavior then make it "ancient history." What works for one kid may not help another, and what works one day may flop the next. Check with other teachers to see what's working for them - or not. Some of my kids are so much fun, so enthusiastic once they're "reined in" a little. For all my classes I track daily on a little form what I call "school skills," and it's 20% of the grade. They must be on time, prepared with materials and HW, engaged in classwork as expected, and they must follow the rules of the classroom. I present it as a very positive thing, a way to improve their performance, their learning, and their grades.
