Title: Spanish Geosynonyms Web Site
Body: Perhaps some of you may be interested in Spanish geosynonyms, different words used in Spain and Latin America to express the same notion, as coche/carro, calcetines/medias, chaqueta/saco, etc. I am one of the coordinators of an ambitious survey in the VARILEX (VARIación LÉXica del español del mundo) project and after a few years now we have collected lexical information for all the Spanish-speaking countries with the help of many local researchers. All data is in a relational database and what I am trying to do now is to create some simple interfaces for anyone to use on the Internet, not only those directly involved in this project. One of the first things created is a search interface to get a map showing where a determined word is used. The URL of the test is temporarily at: http://lingua.cc.sophia.ac.jp/varilex/php-atlas/lista3_search.php For example, if we want to search the geosynonyms of AIR-BAG, we choose it in "Referencia (inglés)" and press "buscar". Doing this, we obtain a list of words as aerobag, guarda-volante, parachoque, protector, etc. If we want to know where the word "aerobag" is used, then we press the icon at the right side and obtain on the fly a map in PDF format with the details. We can see also the word "parachoque" in the list. If we press in this word, we can see that this word is used in the sense of BUMPERS too, and, of course, we can check where it is used in this way. If we want to know about the word "chompa", we put it in "forma" and press "buscar" again. We obtain a list of words containing the string "chompa" and also note that it is used in different senses depending on the geographical situation, as CARDIGAN, SWEATER, WINDBREAKER, etc. If we are not sure about the spelling of "chompa" we can input for example "chom_a" and we obtain both "chompa" and "chomba", and also check that "chomba" and "chompa" coexist in some places only in the sense of SWEATER.
