Title: Georgia Professor Seeks to Preserve Gullah
Body: Few descendants of Gullah or Geechee people in the southeast U.S. still speak their ancestors' hybrid languages, which were a mixture of English and various African dialects. But a professor at Georgia Southern University hopes to revive interest in the language with projects centered around a collection of 73-year-old recordings of stories and songs in Gullah. It is hoped that the projects, which include the development of National Parks Service cultural centers, will stimulate young people in the region to recognize their local culture and stay nearby rather than relocating around the country. Body: From: http://www.wcgs.ca/events/callforpapers.php Call for Expressions of Interest and Proposals University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada 24-27 August 2006 The Waterloo Centre for German Studies at the University of Waterloo invites expressions of interest and, subsequently, proposals for papers of thirty minutes length to be given in English (preferred) or German at an international interdisciplinary conference on the diaspora experiences of German-speaking immigrants and their descendants. The Kitchener-Waterloo region, home to the Waterloo Centre for German Studies and University of Waterloo, is Canada’s most prominent area of German settlement. The conference will explore commonalities and differences experienced by German-speaking immigrants and their descendants when living in geographical and linguistic settings other than those of their own ethnic origin. These can include individuals and groups in all continents of the world. Sessions will be planned with a focus on history, linguistics, literature and film. Title: Update: German Immersion Workshop, MT, Aug. 2005
Body: There are still a few openings available for the 21st Annual German Immersion Workshop, Aug. 7-13, which is sponsored by the University of Montana and the Goethe Institut-San Francisco. Located at Flathead Lake, a pristine glacial lake nestled in spectacular mountain scenery near Glacier Park, the workshop offers a week of intensive German language practice for teachers of German and prospective teachers of German. The theme of this year's workshop is "Die deutschsprachigen Laender: ein Mosaik aus Kunst, Kultur und Geographie." In a series of presentations, participants will work on a variety of teaching units which will aid them in successfully and effectively presenting to their classes the fascinating mosaic of German culture, art and geography. Ample time will be provided for recreational activities. A limited number of partial scholarhships are available through the generosity of the German government.
