Title: German's Imported Words
Body: Germany is not only exporting its words; today's spoken German is peppered with new words of foreign origins. What do the words leisure wear, special offers and finger food have in common? They are all finding their way into the German language, especially into the vocabulary of younger speakers. Words such as “latte macchiato” are becoming the hip replacement to German standards such as “Milchkaffee.” Sometimes a word or two may have to be explained, but “seersucker” is the “in” replacement to the unhip and more of a mouthful “leichte Hemden aus reiner Kräuselkreppbaumwolle.” Show your students how language is a living, evolving part of our lives with this “Schöner Schein” Sprachbar. Title: Going to Philadelphia? Must-sees for German Lovers
Body: Philadelphia has many interesting things for those interested in German. 1. German Society of Pennsylvania - Since 1764. The library is a must-see. http://www.germansociety.org 2. Germantown - Neighborhood where Germans settled. http://www.ushistory.org/germantown http://www.germantownhistory.org 3. Old City Philadelphia has architecture and historical connections to German immigrants. http://www.oldcity.org 4. Ludwig's Garten restaurant in Center City - Fun atmosphere, Bavarian menu. http://www.phillytown.com/ludwigs.htm 5. Lancaster County - Home of the first German settlers who passed through Philadelphia. I highly recommend the Hans Herr House (http://www.hansherr.org,) a great example of 18th Century German immigrant living, very well restored, and I recommend the Ephrata Cloister (http://www.ephratacloister.org) another well-preserved example of the religious life of German immigrant groups in this area. Well worth the 1-hour 30-min drive from Philadelphia. There is tons to do with German in Lancaster County. http://www.padutchcountry.com Gwin, C.
