Kluge Center at the Library of Congress Kluge Fellowship Competition Deadline for receipt of applications: August 15, 2005 The Library of Congress invites qualified scholars of the humanities and social sciences to conduct research in the John W. Kluge Center using the Library's collections and resources. Interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, or multilingualresearch is particularly welcome. Eligibility: Scholars who have received a terminal advanced degree within the past seven years in the humanities, social sciences or in a professional field such as architecture or law are eligible. Exceptions may be made for individuals without continuous academic careers. Applicants may be U.S. citizens or foreign nationals. Tenure and Stipend. Fellowships may be held for periods from six to eleven months at a stipend of $4000 per month. Constraints of space and the desirability of acommodating the maximum number of Fellows may lead to an offer of fewer months than originally requested. Title: Resources for Language Class from Wikipedia
Body: Editor's note: The following message, recently posted on the AATG listserv, was intended for teachers of German; however, the source also provides information in Japanese, Swedish, Polish, Spanish, French, Dutch, Portuguese, and Italian. ---- I just accidentally stumbled onto another cool thing to do with Wikipedia (the free online encyclopedia available in umpteen languages). I was browsing de.wikipedia.org, when I noticed that the the birthdate of an author I was reading about was linked. (Arno Schmidt 18. Januar, ) When I clicked on the date, I was taken to http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/18._Januar a great list of info in German a la "This day in history". So I checked out my son's and wife's birthdays too. For every day of the calendar, wikipedia lists historical events, holidays around the world, birthdays, death days...a rich resource...IN GERMAN!! Reviewed by: Nkonko Kamwangamalu, Department of English, Howard University INTRODUCTION First published in 2000, Ebonics: The Urban Education Debate is an edited collection of 6 papers and 6 sets of documents aimed at providing a scholarly response to the controversy that erupted in 1996 in Oakland, California over the status and role of Ebonics in the education of African American (AA) students. The contributors to this volume view Ebonics as a non-standard variety of the English language (but see an opposite view in Kifano and Smith's paper, pp. 62-95). They argue that schools need to become more aware of language diversity and variation and use Ebonics as abridge in helping AA students learn Standard English to improve their academic performance in general, and in reading and language arts in particular.
