Title: Update on Discontinuation of 3 AP Courses
Body: As you are aware, the College Board announced this past spring the discontinuation of three AP courses after their May 2009 exam administrations: AP Computer Science AB, AP French Literature, and AP Latin Literature. In response to concerns we heard from AP teachers about the impact this decision could have to other courses in the discipline, we have sent a letter to principals explaining the decision and providing recommendations for ways that schools can realign their programs to best serve students who study these disciplines. This letter is being mailed to principals at schools that offer these courses, as well as district officials who participate in the course audit. It will arrive this week and early next week. Teachers are being advised of the letter through APCentral (available now), electronic discussion groups (later this week), and AP teacher newsletters (later this month). A copy of the letter can be found here: http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/ap-discontinuation-september-2008.pdf Please forward this information as appropriate to your constituents and/or feel free to post updates on your organization’s web site if desired. Note: External fund-raising efforts are under way in support of AP Italian, and educators can expect an update by October 2008 announcing whether sufficient funds have been raised to ensure the future of that subject. Title: German Pop Star Helps Students Learn the Language
Body: From http://www.salemnews.com/punews/local_story_258215355.html Most of the students taking German at Beverly High School don't consider themselves very good singers. But that's not stopping them from writing a song — in German — using professional recording equipment to create a CD, and then performing on stage with Sebastian Krumbieael, a lead singer for the band Die Prinzen (The Princes) and a famous German rock star who's flying in for a special concert at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School with the kids. In a whirlwind week, Beverly High School became the first high school in the country to try out the program, which is designed to teach German to American students using music and pop culture. The German musicians will be at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School this week. Read the entire article at http://www.salemnews.com/punews/local_story_258215355.html . More information about this program is available from the Goethe Institut at http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/bos/en3663407v.htm .

Title: German Award of Excellence
Body: From http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/ney/lhr/wer/aoe/deindex.htm The annual contest, the Award of Excellence, is gearing up. The Goethe Institut expects to send out materials for the contest by the end of October so teachers have time to plan the materials into your curriculum. For those who are not already registered, the Award of Excellence is contest in which teachers show a DVD to their students, which examines one facet of German culture. The students in turn have to answer questions based on the video, and the instructor sends back an entry form based on these results. Schools across the U.S. and Canada have taken part in this contest, and in the past, we've had numbers exceeding 80,000 students. The grand prize is a trip to Germany and a free course at a Goethe-Institut. Participating schools will also receive consolation prizes just for taking part. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please visit our website: www.goethe.de/aoe . If you have not yet registered, there is a link to form where you can submit your school's profile information on the online form. Information about this year's contest is online on the main page under the '2008-2009' section. The topic for this year is the environment.

Title: Spanish Language News for Spanish Language Learners
Body: From http://www.spanishnewsbites.com Spanish NewsBites is a free language-learning website designed to help people learn Spanish. * Three to four times a week, they choose a news story from Spain or Latin America and adapt it for language learners. Often, it's the kind of story you won't easily find anywhere in English. * Then they add mouse rollover translation into English of key vocabulary. * Then they prepare an audio transcript of the text. This can be done straight from your browser, or it can be downloaded as an MP3 file. * Then they add a PDF file of the text and glossary, so you can print it out and take it away with you. * Then they add links which we think will give a little further context and generally enhance your reading. * Then they add an online self-correction exercise. * The news stories are classified into categories by theme or by Spanish level - beginner, intermediate or advanced. So you can choose what you read according to your interests or your level. To learn more and to try it out, go to http://www.spanishnewsbites.com .
