Body: From http://www.distinguishedlanguagecenters.org/conferences.htm The Fall 2008 Conference on Teaching and Learning to Near-Native Levels of Language Proficiency will be held in Linthicum Heights, Maryland at the Conference Center at the Maritime Institute, December 6-7, 2008. The Coalition of Distinguished Language Centers conducts annual (and, in some years, semi-annual) conferences about teaching to and reaching Level 4 (near-native) proficiency. The conferences include theory and research, as well as updates on high-level-language program activities, along with a healthy dose of shared practical experience. Body: From http://www.umea-congress.se/polar_1.html In October 8-10 2008 the conference Human Dimensions in the Circumpolar Arctic: An Interdisciplinary Conference under the Auspices of the International Polar Year will take place at Umeå University, Sweden. The conference will pay particular attention to human life and conditions in the North in the past, the present and the future. Questions that will be addressed are how the situation in the North has been depicted in science, art and literature and how the possibilities for various kinds of social and economical developments have been understood at various times. Other important questions are how climate, ecology and different types of resource use have influenced conditions for life in the North and the role of national and international politics for northern developments and conditions. Body: Online Distance Program in Bilingual Special Education The George Washington University’s bilingual special education online distance program is now accepting applications for the 15 credit hour graduate Certificate in Bilingual Special Education. Spring Courses: TRED 227 Teaching Reading and Writing in ESL The course is designed to give the student theoretical and practical knowledge of the development of reading and writing skills in English for kindergarten through adult English language learners. It will provide students with an understanding of the literacy needs of ELL students; a theoretical background of second language reading and writing processes; and practice with instructional approaches that assist ELL students in becoming skilled and motivated readers and writers. SPED 266 The Development of Language in Young (Exceptional) Children The purpose of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the study of language acquisition in typically developing young children as well as children who are exceptional. SPED 277 Teaching the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Student with Special Needs: Methods, Materials and Classroom Management The intent of this course is to present methods and materials for teaching and assessing students who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) and/or who have exceptionalities. Participants will engage in reflective practice as they analyze the language demands of classroom settings, as well as the instructional practices and materials for the special needs of all students. Students will be exposed to research in and theories of language acquisition, curriculum development and classroom management for use with culturally and linguistically diverse students with and without disabilities. Instructional adaptations and assessment designed to meet the cultural, linguistic, academic, socio-emotional needs of students in the general education and pullout settings will be presented and discussed. Current curricula and material for CLD and/or exceptional learners will be reviewed.

The prize program was created in 2003 to raise awareness of the growing importance of international knowledge and skills for U.S. students and annually awards prizes totaling $150,000 in five different categories. The 2008 Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Elementary/Middle School ($25,000) An elementary or middle school that engages all or most of its students in learning about other world regions, cultures and languages. High School ($25,000) A secondary school that engages all or most of its students in learning about Asia, Africa, Latin America or the Middle East, or about international affairs through its curriculum and through partnerships with other countries or local organizations. District/State ($25,000) A state or one of the 100 largest school districts that is actively promoting the development of international knowledge and skills on a wide scale through the creation of robust policies and specific programming initiatives. Media/Technology ($25,000) A program within a U.S. based public or private for-profit or non-profit organization that has developed outstanding programs that use media/technology to educate students or teachers about other world regions and cultures, or international issues. Body: The Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) would like to invite all interested high school juniors and seniors to apply to the 2009 Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP). The RSP annually selects 25 exceptional high school juniors and seniors from throughout the United States to engage in an intensive study of Japan. Selected students will participate in an Internet-mediated course on Japan from February to June 2009. The 2009 Reischauer Scholars Program is now accepting applications! This will be a newly created position in response to the University's strategic plan emphasizing global perspectives and initiatives. The Director will lead the development of a comprehensive, state-of-the-art language instruction program for undergraduate and graduate students. The Director will also work in partnership with the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the chairs of the relevant departments to formulate strategic plans and policies for language training and will be responsible for developing collaborations with other international programs on the Boston campus and abroad. Candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field; native or near-native fluency in English and at least one other language; and a record of excellence in teaching, as well as demonstrated leadership in language programs and relevant administrative experience. The Director will be considered for an academic appointment at a rank consistent with his or her teaching and scholarly qualifications. From the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute to the San Juan School District in southeastern Utah, tribes and school districts are using native languages to better reach students. In the Nebo School District, three Navajo women have spent the past nine years building a program that tutors American Indian students in academics and teaches American Indian art and culture two evenings a week and in the summer. While nationally, 49 percent of American Indian students graduate from high school, Nebo's graduation rate has risen from 37 percent to as high as 94 percent in 2006.
