Title: Using Graphic Organizers When Teaching English
Body: From http://teachingenglish.org.uk Visual representations of information are by no means an innovation in education. The use of graphs and charts to represent statistical information and timelines showing the sequence of historical events have long been accepted tools, while in language teaching, the mind-map is already a common aid to brainstorming a topic. However, with the realization that all learners are, to some extent, visual learners, the focus on process rather than product, and with increasing emphasis on developing organizational and thinking skills alongside language skills, visual tools such as graphic organizers are being increasingly employed. Title: New Resource Provides Easier Access to Foreign Languages for People who are Blind
Body: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE August 29, 2008 CONTACT: Michele Scheib, Project Specialist EMAIL: pr@miusa.org TEL/TTY: 541-343-1284 FAX: 541-343-6812 New Resource Provides Easier Access to Foreign Languages for People who are Blind When Mr. Avraham Rabby was selected as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, he was the first blind person to serve. At the time, he spoke English and Hebrew, and during his career, he learned Spanish and French. Through the Foreign Service, Mr. Rabby experienced the world, completing seven jobs on five continents and witnessing historic events. For people who are blind or low vision, learning a foreign language and getting the resources needed just became easier. The National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE) encourages people who are blind or have visual impairments to learn a foreign language and pursue international travel with a purpose®. Towards this goal, the NCDE published a new informational guide to support blind and low vision students to take a broad range of foreign language courses, from Arabic to Turkish, by providing the tools needed so that course materials can be accessed. Read “Accessing Foreign Language Materials as a Blind or Low Vision Student” online or download in various formats for free at: http://www.miusa.org/ncde/tipsheets/languageguide . This free resource includes: ο The capability of commonly used assistive technology and software to handle foreign languages ο Guidance for locating audio, braille or large print materials in foreign languages ο Tips on transcribing braille textbooks in foreign languages or using readers and scribes ο Considerations for studying the foreign language abroad. Primary emphasis of this new informational guide is on accessing the reading and writing components of critical need languages, although information is also applicable to more commonly taught languages. The National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE), which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Mobility International USA, works to increase the participation and inclusion of people with disabilities in international exchange programs. Title: Book: Effects of Frequency in Classroom Second Language Learning
Body: From http://www.peterlang.com/Index.cfm?vLang=E&vSiteID=4&vSiteName=BookDetail.cfm&VID=11602 Effects of Frequency in Classroom Second Language Learning: Quasi-experiment and Stimulated-recall Analysis By Tomoko Tode Publisher: Peter Lang Summary: The view of exemplar-based second language learning emphasizes the importance of frequency in learning grammar. According to this view, type frequency rather than token frequency contributes to learning generalized knowledge beyond item-based constructions. This book investigates how frequency in experiencing exemplars affects the learning of the English primary verb be by junior high school students in Japan. The study consists of a quasi-experiment and stimulated-recall analysis of the data. The quasi-experiment compares three kinds of output practice: practice with increased type frequency, practice with increased token frequency, and practice without increased frequency. The experiment also explores how the frequency effects relate to the extent of explicit knowledge about the target structures. In the stimulated-recall analysis, learners engaging in the type frequency practice and those engaging in the token frequency practice are compared in terms of thought processes employed while practicing. The book discusses how frequency promotes classroom second language learning by taking the role of awareness of form-meaning connections into consideration.
