Title: Latin workshop at Temple University, Philadelphia
Body: The Department of Classics at Temple U. will sponsor a workshop on Death and Dying in the Roman World to be held on the Ambler Campus from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, 1 November, 2008. Faculty of the Department will be speakers and facilitators of discussion among participants. Participants will be limited to 36. Topics will include historical information, art and architecture of the world of the dead, primary texts on customs and consolations, philosophical views of death. Title: 2nd Annual CSIET Global Classroom Awards
Body: From http://www.actfl.org/i4a/pages/headlinedetails.cfm?id=249 The October 15th deadline for the 2nd Annual Council on Standards for International Educational Travel Global Classroom Awards is fast approaching. CSIET conducts this annual awards program to recognize schools that actively support international youth exchange. The winning schools will each receive a $1,000 scholarship for one of its students to study abroad or equivalent funds to be put toward increasing school-wide international awareness. One representative from each of the winning schools will be invited to the 2009 National School Conference on International Youth Exchange in Hartford, Connecticut (February 27-28, 2009) and receive complementary registration, one night accommodation, and airfare to take part. Body: Central States Offers Scholarship and Grant Opportunities by Barbara S. Andrews with thanks to Carrol Lund WANTED: Professional foreign language teachers to apply for scholarships and grants available through the regional Central States Conference professional organization. Does a two to four-week teacher-immersion experience for summer, 2009, appeal to you? For Spanish teachers two scholarships are available in Mexico and one in Spain. For German teachers the Goethe Institut offers immersion. Scholarship recipients are financially responsible only for their flight to Mexico, Spain, or Germany. For all language teachers, the Concordia Language Village Teacher Seminar offers a $600 scholarship. For all five CSC scholarships, the candidate agrees to present a CSC session in 2010, and the candidate needs to teach at least a 50% foreign language assignment in the Central States region. Finally the scholarship applicant needs to have attended a CSC Conference within the past five years. You qualify if you attended Dearborn in 2008, Kansas City in 2007, Chicago in 2006, Columbus in 2005, Dearborn in 2004, or Minneapolis in 2003. Scholarship applications are due December 15, 2008. Check all information and download the scholarship application form at http://www.csctfl.org . Do you have an innovative classroom project idea? Grants are available through the regional CSC professional organization. Preference is always given to quality proposals that prove an expandable impact. To qualify, one must be a member of CSC Advisory Council. The price for yearly membership is the same as the price for conference registration. Grant applications are due January 15, 2009. Candidates specializing in Applied Linguistics (SLA studies, language pedagogy, computer-assisted language learning, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, intercultural communication, and related areas) are encouraged to apply. In addition to teaching and research, the candidate will also be expected to train and supervise graduate student apprentices. The candidate will also be a key participant in current efforts to transform a program with an outstanding tradition in teaching into a department with an innovative research agenda. The language competency may be in any of the following: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi/Urdu, Italian, Portuguese, or Russian. Title: Invitation to the September 19 Interagency Language Roundtable Meeting at FSI
Body: The September meeting of the federal Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) will take place on Friday, September 19, 2008, at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) at the George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center (the "Shultz Center"). The plenary at this meeting will be a presentation on the Summit on Oral Proficiency Testing at ILR Levels 3, 4, & 5. A summit dealing with oral proficiency testing at the higher ILR levels was held in June of this year in Monterey, California. The September plenary presenters will report on the background and rationale for the Summit, results of the discussions, and several proposed future initiatives. The plenary program will also include reports from each of the ILR Committee Chairs. The three committee meetings will take place from 8:45 to 10:00, followed by the traditional networking. The plenary will begin at 10:30 a.m. in room C-3114. All committee meetings and the plenary are open to any interested person. The plenary will conclude by approximately 12:00. For interested Government members of the ILR, the Special Interest Group for CASL will meet from 1:00 to about 2:15. Parking at the Shultz Center is available for one dollar. When you arrive, come to the Visitor's Center at the entrance to the FSI campus and show a picture ID.
