Title: Report: Foreign Language Study Needs Overhaul
Body: From http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071227/NEWS0102/712270377/1058/NEWS01 Report: Foreign language study needs overhaul Students lack oral skills BY ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS December 27, 2007 Two major reports this fall on foreign language teaching in Ohio have reached the same conclusion: The state must start providing long, uninterrupted stretches of instruction as early as kindergarten and stop repeating material year after year. Students "begin again and again with, 'Hello, how are you?' as they move from one school to the next rather than advancing to more challenging material," according to a report released this month by the state's Foreign Language Advisory Council. Language classes lasting for just nine, 12 or 16 weeks are common throughout the state, the report said. The 39-page report also says the state must increase instruction in less-traditional languages like Chinese and Arabic while continuing to teach western languages like French and Spanish. Title: Article: Immigrant Teen Writes book about Her American Dream
Body: From http://www.tdn.com/articles/2007/12/17/this_day/doc476623560a25b265593818.txt Immigrant teen writes book about her American Dream By The Associated Press Monday, December 17, 2007 HOUSTON --- On her first day of fourth grade, Yuliana Gallegos stood in front of her classmates, looking out on a roomful of students who stared back at her as if she had landed from Mars. Only a few weeks earlier, Yuliana had brimmed with excitement about moving from Mexico to Houston, where she and her family would start a new life in a new country. Only a few hours earlier, she had been bubbling with eagerness about meeting her new classmates. Suddenly, all her enthusiasm deflated. She could not understand a word her teacher said. She just wanted to be invisible. Today, less than seven years later, Gallegos is the author of a book -- in English and Spanish -- about her experiences as a newly arrived immigrant. The slim, 55-page volume, called "Mi sueno de America/My American Dream," published by Houston-based Arte Publico, tells the story of the obstacles Yuliana had to overcome in her first year in the United States and offers lessons for other young people who may feel like outsiders.
