Title: AP Spanish Language Research Study
Body: The College Board Advanced Placement Program (AP) is conducting a research study to evaluate the use of various standard-setting methods for AP Spanish Language. Standard setting involves determining one or more cutscores to place examinees into various categories (e.g., pass/fail; qualified/well qualified, etc.). For the AP Exams, the categories are the traditional AP 1 through 5 score levels. The process of standard setting requires judgments from a panel of experts who have content knowledge in the area of exam and who know the examinee population (i.e., understand what students should know and be able to do after completing the AP course or the equivalent college course). The College Board is seeking experienced AP Spanish teachers who are interested in participating in this research study by serving on the standard-setting panel for AP Spanish Language. The panel will meet for three days in New York City on April 10–12. All travel and lodging expenses will be covered by the College Board and you will be paid an honorarium in the amount of $1,500. Participation for all three days of the meeting is required. If selected, you will be trained on the specific standard-setting methods being evaluated during the three-day meeting. If you are interested and available to participate, please provide the College Board with information about yourself by completing a brief questionnaire. This information will be used to make sure those selected to serve on the Advanced Placement standard-setting panel are as representative as possible of AP Spanish Language teachers. Please complete the questionnaire by December 20. You will be notified of the final selections by January 15. The questionnaire is available at http://click.collegeboard.com/101646582.70559.0.28915 .

Title: New Book: The Bilingual Mind
Body: From http://www.springer.com/west/home?SGWID=4-102-22-173660359-0&changeHeader=true&SHORTCUT=www.springer.com/978-0-387-30913-2 Title: The Bilingual Mind: Thinking, Feeling and Speaking in Two Languages Author: Rafael Art Javier Publisher: Springer Summary: As bilingual individuals enter the educational system and the clinical landscape, they struggle with intricate, often painful questions of identity, culture, and assimilation. Professionals working with these individuals need to complement their knowledge of specific cultural issues with the psychological processes that all bilingual speakers share. The Bilingual Mind: Thinking, Feeling, and Speaking in Two Languages attempts to fill a gap in the cross-cultural literature by illuminating the bilingual experience in both its social and clinical contexts. Rafael Javier makes an empirically founded case for what he terms the bilingual mind, with its own particular approach to cognition, memory, and emotional and social development. From this framework, he proceeds to salient questions such as: -What are the effects of bilingualism on cognitive development? -Is some degree of language shifting always present in bilingual thinking? -Do interpreters improve or compromise communication? -What assessment instruments are best suited to bilingual individuals? -What are the key issues in providing appropriate treatment interventions to bilingual patients? -How can professionals be better trained to work with this population? Given the prevalence of -- and controversies surrounding-- bilingualism today, the author intends his text to benefit a wide range of therapists, education professionals, and scholars. Title: New Report: English Language Proficiency Assessment in the Nation: Current Status and Future Practice
Body: From http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/newsline/archives/2007/12/new_report_engl.html English Language Proficiency Assessment in the Nation: Current Status and Future Practice Edited by Jamal Abedi Standardized testing that seeks to measure students’ English language proficiency has improved significantly nationwide since 2001, when Congress passed the No Child Left Behind Act. Such testing plays a critical role in the academic success of the nation’s estimated 5 million English language learners. The No Child Left Behind Act mandated reliable, valid annual assessments of students’ English proficiency. In response, the U.S. Department of Education awarded grants to four consortia of states in 2002, and directed each to create and field-test a state-of-the-art assessment. Abedi’s 196-page report is the first to summarize the progress of the four efforts and to report on the current testing landscape nationwide. The full report is available for download from http://education.ucdavis.edu/research/ELP_Report.pdf . For more information about the report, go to http://education.ucdavis.edu/research/ELP_Assessment.html .
