Title: New Book: ICT and Language Learning
Body: From http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?PID=278189 ICT and Language Learning: From Print to the Mobile Phone by Marie-Madeleine Kenning Publisher: Palgrave MacMillan Summary: ICT and Language Learning addresses two questions: What has been the impact of the evolution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the experience of the language user/learner historically and today? What can we infer from this, and from an analysis of communication in today's world, about how best to use ICT in language learning? Offering a novel perspective, the book explores the interplay of ICT and language learning from the printing press to the mobile phone. It considers how technological advances, through their impact on communication, language education and language learning itself, affect not only how languages are learnt and taught, but also what kind of language is (or should be) learnt and taught. As well as identifying some recurrent themes and concerns, the approach highlights the multifaceted and complex nature of language study and its evolutionary dimension. Title: Call for Replica Papers: Language Teaching
Body: For the first time in the field, the journal Language Teaching (Cambridge University Press) will now devote a section of research papers dedicated exclusively to replication studies. Historically, LT has maintained its role exclusively as a source of information, particularly through its state-of-the-art reviews. However, in line with the new content and format from 2008, publishing such papers will also bring in a new creativity into the journal and a direct and unique contribution to current research agendas, more characteristic of mainstream refereed research journals. In deciding our purview for these papers, we decided to focus on an area of experimental research which receives little or no specific attention in the mainstream journals yet which - it is generally agreed - needs to play a far more significant role than it has up to now in our field. In keeping with the survey characteristics of Language Teaching we also encourage submissions of meta-analyses which attempt to combine or synthesize a series of comparable research replications. The details of this permanent Call for Papers can be obtained from the Editor at: gporte@gmail.com . The Language Teaching website is available at http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayJournal?jid=LTA .

Title: Article: Cognitive Benefits of Learning Languages
Body: From http://www.dukegiftedletter.com/articles/vol8no1_ef.html Cognitive Benefits of Learning Languages Duke Gifted Letter Volume 8 / Issue 1 / Fall 2007 Foreign language programs are often one of the first items to be scrutinized and cut when elementary, middle, and high schools in the U.S. face poor performance evaluations or budget crunches. However, many studies have demonstrated the benefits of second language learning not only on student’s linguistic abilities but on their cognitive and creative abilities as well. Duke TIP interviewed several experts in the field about the advantages of foreign language learning for children. Martha G. Abbott, Director of Education for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Therese Sullivan Caccavale, president of the National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL) Ken Stewart, 2006 ACTFL National Language Teacher of the Year; AP Spanish teacher at Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina Read the interview at http://www.dukegiftedletter.com/articles/vol8no1_ef.html .

Title: Article: Dallas Immigrant Secondary Students Will Learn Subjects in Spanish
Body: From http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/education/stories/DN-prospanish_26met.ART0.State.Edition1.36ed4db.html DISD tries online courses for students deficient in English Immigrant secondary students will learn subjects in Spanish By STELLA M. CHÁVEZ December 26, 2007 Beginning in January, students in the Dallas Independent School District will be able to take courses such as algebra, biology, geometry, chemistry and world history online and in Spanish. The approach is unlike anything tried before in Texas school districts, which traditionally teach older immigrant students in English. Bilingual education and the use of Spanish has long been the practice in elementary schools, but the dearth of qualified bilingual teachers has made it nearly impossible to replicate those efforts at the secondary level. "They've had nothing like this before," said Felipe Alanis, associate dean for the division of continuing education at the University of Texas at Austin, which is spearheading this initiative dubbed LUCHA, the Spanish word for fight. "It's either sink or swim, so it's very difficult" for immigrant students.
