Title: Article: Using Skype for Language Learning
Body: Make Skype more than just another desktop icon By Ben Redmond December 2007 Foreign language teachers should already be familiar with what Skype has to offer. Now hosting nearly 220 million user accounts worldwide, it has become the preferred alternative for affordable international communication. Savvy language instructors have already joined the Skype generation. They recognize an unparalleled possibility; with Skype, instructors can offer students the experience of true interaction with native speakers of almost any target language while bypassing the hurdles of international travel. Skype’s innovative software offers instructors the opportunity to promote international language exchange, but only if they make use of fitting complementary applications. Don’t expect students to connect with a capable and enthusiastic language exchange partner by casually browsing the profiles of 200 million plus Skype users. Instead, point them to the Mixxer, an online language exchange database provided by Dickinson College, which hosts a global community of over 13,000 members. The Mixxer helps Skype users find an exchange partner by narrowing their search according to native language and one of 28 available target languages. Title: Book: Online Communication in Language Learning and Teaching
Body: From http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?PID=275590 Online Communication in Language Learning and Teaching by Marie-Noëlle Lamy and Regine Hampel Publisher: Palgrave MacMillan Description: Online Communication in Language Learning and Teaching offers theoretical and practical as well as research perspectives for approaching technologies that support online communication for language learning. Examining tools such as forums, chats, audio and visual real-time platforms as well as virtual worlds and mobile devices, and reviewing the literature that deals with such tools in use in educational settings, the authors identify key theoretical issues (e.g. pedagogic developments in online language learning, learning theories, teacher and student experience, assessment) and offer a thorough appraisal of the potential benefits and challenges of learning and teaching a language via these technologies. The authors talk directly and practically to teachers about research issues of relevance to them and suggest doable small-scale projects, as well as providing an extensive annotated collection of online resources.
