Title: Call for Papers and Conference: Live Your Language Alliance Conference
Body: The Live Your Language Alliance is excited to announce that the very first Live Your Language Alliance Conference will be held March 17, 18, and 19, 2008 at Humboldt State University, Arcata, California. You are welcome and encouraged to attend and/or submit a paper proposal. This year’s conference theme is: *Shut up and Speak: Gathering the Tools to Live Our Languages We invite you to submit a proposal to present your work during workshops or sessions at this conference. We are seeking presenters who will greatly benefit and compliment the efforts and important work that language workers, advocates, programs, and tribes are conducting in northern California. Participants from the Tolowa, Karuk, Yurok, Hupa, and Wiyot people, as well as others, will be in attendance at this first community sponsored Native Languages Conference in Humboldt County, California. Strands include three areas: 1) Beginning: Language Learners and Master Speakers 2) Intermediate: Language Teachers (community, k-12, college) 3) Advanced: Language Specialists (program directors, people documenting languages, curriculum developers, people needing linguistic training) Within the above strands we encourage sessions that address key topic areas such as: • Developing a language revitalization program • Strengthening tribal language programs • Advanced steps in language learning and obtaining fluency • Grassroots language revitalization • Governmental, educational, or institutional language revitalization • Successful language revitalization with youth and community • Technology used in language revitalization We are especially seeking presentations that inform and educate conference participants on the best practices in language revitalization: not presentations which primarily promote a specific company, product, service, or solution. The sessions will range in time from 45, 60, and 90 minutes and the committee encourages proposals that allow time for a questions-and-answers period, multimedia presentations, digital handout materials (CD, email, online) offered to participants, and post-conference assistance. You may submit more than one session proposal for consideration. Conference presenters will receive an honorarium. Presenters will also receive mileage reimbursement and free hotel accommodations for the duration of the conference. Complete session proposals must be received by January 16, 2008. No late submissions will be accepted. Email submissions are highly encouraged! The committee will contact you on or before January 25, 2008 to let you know if your session has been included in the conference. The conference will be held on the ancestral lands of the Wiyot people at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. We encourage presenters to offer digital materials to participants when at all possible. We would be glad to offer the conference website as a place for participants to download materials before or after the conference. Please let us know if you would like to take advantage of this offer. Through this first conference, the Alliance is working to establish a permanent Native Language Institute here on the North Coast. Please email Marnie Atkins (marnie.atkins@gmail.com) for session application forms and further information. Please mail your session proposal information to: Live Your Language Alliance Attn: Conference Committee P.O. Box 334 Arcata, California 95518 Or send via email to: marnie.atkins@gmail.com Conference phone number: (707) 672-4621

Now in the second year of this program, these fellowships are made possible as part of a $1 million gift from Kathryn Davis to address today’s critical need for more effective language proficiency. Title: Arabic Without Walls Curriculum
Body: From http://www.nmelrc.org/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=17&MMN_position=42:19 The U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education has awarded the University of California Consortium on Language Learning & Teaching and the National Middle East Language Resource Center a grant to develop Arabic without Walls, an innovative distance-learning program that will allow anyone, ranging from high school students to senior citizens, to study Arabic-no matter where they live. Arabic without Walls is based on the widely-used textbook Al-Kitaab fii Ta`alum al-Arabiyya (Brustad et al., 2nd ed., Georgetown University Press, 2004). The content and scenarios of the interviews parallel the content of the lessons in Al-Kitaab and will be used as the basis for online learning activities that help students acquire real facility in using Arabic. Arabic Without Walls contains materials for three separate components broken down under the Course Content into Al-Kitaab, Interviews, and Culture. While each component may stand by itself and therefore may be studied independently, the three are designed to complement each other in Arabic Without Walls. Access Arabic Without Walls at http://arabicwithoutwalls.ucdavis.edu/aww .
