Title: Language Learning Scenarios Available Online

These scenarios begin with high interest topics that stimulate creativity and encourage divergent thinking. They consist of student-centered activities designed to support language development as students explore culturally relevant themes using authentic, contextualized target-language texts, audio/video, theatre, Web sites, and other media. Title: Panwapa: Virtual World for Children
Body: From http://www.panwapa.com/deploy_en/info_for_caregivers.php Sesame Workshop, the creators of Sesame Street worldwide, has launched a new initiative called Panwapa for kids 4-8. The site is a ground-breaking, safe, virtual world where kids will be allowed to meet other Panwapa Kids and explore the countries of the world through the creations of a virtual identity, exchanges with other characters in the virtual world, activities, and videos. Panwapa is available online for free in five different languages: English, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin and Japanese. A Teacher's Guide will support the use of Panwapa in classrooms. Title: Pilot Testers Sought for National Online Early Language Learning Assessment
Body: From http://casls.uoregon.edu/select.php The Center for Applied Second Language Studies proudly announces that the National Online Early Language Learning Assessment (NOELLA) field test has started on October 22, 2007. As the first affordable, universally accessible, and nationally norm-based assessment of proficiency of early language learning, NOELLA will provide schools throughout the country with the means to measure the performance of young students (3-6 graders) accurately and reliably. NOELLA is currently being developed and piloted to assess children’s learning in four languages: French, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. A Korean pilot study is in the launching process and will be ready very soon. We would be delighted to have your participation! We also strongly encourage you to recruit colleagues at your school and in your area for our NOELLA assessments in Spanish, French, Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean. This issue of RFL is devoted to publishing articles that are concerned with all aspects of reading and vocabulary. Specifically, we solicit papers covering - vocabulary development through reading - the relationship between vocabulary and reading - vocabulary and the teaching of reading - reading vocabularies RFL is particularly interested in articles on languages other than English. We also encourage collaboration between university researchers and practitioners. We are fortunate that Professor Rob Waring, Notre Dame Seishin University, Okayama, Japan, is the editor of this special issue. Questions, proposals, and submissions should be directed to Contributors are advised to read our submission guidelines for information on RFL's submission policies.
