Title: News Article: Plaza Comunitaria Software to Help Georgia English Language Learners Learn Content in Spanish
Body: From http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/102907/news_20071029041.shtml Learning tool for Spanish speakers to be added at high school Grant from Mexican consulate By Benjamin Price October 29, 2007 Clarke County school officials believe new software provided by the Mexican government could help hundreds of students here whose first language is Spanish. Clarke Central High School in Georgia will become one of the first schools in Georgia to use computer software known as Plaza Comunitaria, or Community Plaza, after receiving a $15,000 grant from the Mexican consulate this month. The school plans to offer the program in January. The Plaza Comunitaria provides students with Georgia high school curriculum in Spanish after school, to compliment the same lessons they learn in the class during the school day. It will help students who speak some English reinforce what they learn, district officials said, and help them tackle difficult concepts that can get further muddled by a language barrier. Students who speak very little English could use the software after school to work toward their GED or even get a Mexican equivalency diploma. Title: Webquest Resources
Body: A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web. Here are some webquest resources suggested by FLTEACH users: One person recommends Trackstar at http://trackstar.4teachers.org/trackstar . Trackstar allows teachers to enter annotated website addresses to create personalized “tracks” that students can use for Webquest. Tracks are archived and searchable so that teachers can also use other teachers’ tracks. --- Another FLTEACH user did the following activity with her Spanish 5 class: Given parameters of 2 weeks, a budget of $5,000, and strict instructions to stay within a Spanish-speaking country and NOT spend the entire time on the beach, they were to plan a trip, including ALL transportation, lodging, meals, activities, everything that a well-seasoned travel agent would do. Not only were they to present me with a detailed itinerary, but also an itemized "receipt", and they had to try to "sell" me their trip via a multi-media presentation. AND they needed to keep a 2-week journal of their own trip to these wonderful places. Kotecki, J. Re: Values of WebQuests. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 11 Jun 2007). --- Another recommended webquest site is WebQuest.org at http://www.webquest.org/index.php . Here are explanations about webquests, a guide to resources for creating webquests, and search tools for finding webquests.

Title: New Book: Pathways to Multilingualism
Body: Pathways to Multilingualism: Evolving Perspectives on Immersion Education Edited by Tara Williams Fortune and Diane J. Tedick Publisher: Multilingual Matters This volume focuses on the evolution of perspectives and practices within language immersion education and showcases an international roster of scholars who offer theoretical perspectives, research reviews and empirical studies on teaching, learning and language development in immersion programs. This collection of studies and discussions represents three branches of immersion education, foreign language ("one-way"), bilingual ("two-way") and indigenous immersion programs. Each branch has its unique situational dynamics to address, and such dynamics must be carefully considered particularly in the interpretation of research findings. Nevertheless, the volume's co-editors argue that much can be learned from research and practices carried out in closely related immersion settings that experience similar challenges related to the delicate balance between language and content. This volume presents an opportunity for thoughtful cross-context dialogue and knowledge exchange.
