Title: Judge Sets Deadline for Arizona Lawmakers to Fund ELL Programs
Body: From http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2007/10/12/08aparizona_web.h27.html?tmp=281241483 Judge Sets Deadline for Arizona Lawmakers to Fund ELL Programs Association Press October 12, 2007 A federal judge on Thursday set a March 4 deadline for the state to adequately fund programs for students who are learning the English language. U.S. District Judge Raner C. Collins of Tucson also said he will impose sanctions if the state fails to comply with his order. He didn't specify what those sanctions might be. The contempt order stems from the Legislature's failure to meet a previous deadline set by the judge. The case centers on several rulings by Collins and another judge that the state has failed to provide adequate funding for programs for students who are learning English in violation of a federal civil rights law requiring equal opportunities in education. Body: From http://www.oregonlive.com/education/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1192591534232800.xml&coll=7 Parents say school misread son's ethnicity Language - A lawsuit claims Hillsboro educators placed the English-speaking boy in ESL solely because he is Latino October 17, 2007 ESMERALDA BERMUDEZ For more than a year, a Latino boy who speaks only English sat in his classroom confused by what his Spanish-speaking classmates were saying and falling behind in his work. His mother complained to school officials, but they insisted he belonged in the English as a Second Language program. Complicating things, the boy was considered to be developmentally delayed. Now the family has sued the Hillsboro School District, accusing educators at Orenco Elementary School of putting Alek Villaraldo in the English as a Second Language program during kindergarten and a portion of first grade solely because he was Latino. In the family's federal lawsuit, his parents, Indhira and Rene Villaraldo, say they were never notified or asked for consent to place their son in the program. Title: Free Language Flashcards for Native Communities
Body: Alphabet Flashcards--FREE from NBC Universal for Native Communities Forwarded message: I've received permission from my Corp Comm department to open up the alphabet flashcard project to the whole company. So, if you hear of any Indian school or Reservation that offers native language lessons, and would like to have flashcards designed to use in conjunction with the lessons, please let me know. It wouldn't cost them anything. We would just need the list of words with the corresponding translations. Thanks. Patty Jones Sourcing Specialist/Contract Administrator NBC Universal, Inc.
