Title: Step into German: Music Video Contest
Body: “Step into German”, the pop music website created by the Goethe Institut in San Francisco and the American Association of Teachers of German to make learning German more fun for middle and high school students has announced another round of contests. If Germany's latest hits were not enough to entice students to learn German, then the chance to win an iPod, CD's or iTunes gift certificates should clinch the deal. Students are invited to peruse the Website, which features music videos from German pop, rap, and metal artists, information about the music scenes in different German cities and facts about German literature, history and culture. Then, they can test their knowledge with through an online quiz. Questions for round 1 of the contest have already been posted, and the answers are due by November 19. The questions for round two will be posted on November 20. Students are also invited to make a podcast or music video on the topic “German(s) in my life” for the chance to be featured on the Step into German website. The Step into German website is available at http://www.stepintogerman.org .

Title: 1000Stories: On the Road in the U.S. and Germany
Body: Earlier this month, Florian Thalhofer, a new-media artist and documentary filmmaker from Berlin, started traveling all over the United States by motorcycle (provided by BMW), while U.S. filmmaker Mark Simon travels throughout Germany by car. During their journeys, each filmmaker writes about his experiences, collects stories, and conducts interviews, posted daily as a video weblog, or "vlog." Their route is determined by interested folks in the U.S. and in Germany who reply to their "Americans wanted"/ "Germans wanted" online ad. Get in touch with the filmmakers via http://1000stories.com to suggest itineraries and potential interview candidates and to comment on the project. Current vlog entries are also available at this website.

Title: Songs for a Beginning French Class
Body: An FLTEACH user recently posted the following list and commentary about songs that he uses in a beginning French class: I try to include a song each week in my French 101 class. Not easy to find things that are simple enough for them to follow at that level, getting the gist during the video after some pre-listening preparation to help them understand the vocabulary and the concepts. Here is my list of songs for this semester with online sites for words and for the music videos. I give them copies of the words with plenty of glosses to help with the vocab. Title: Day of the Dead Ideas and Resources
Body: Here are some resources and ideas for Day of the Dead activities: An FLTEACH user suggests going to the Willy Wonka candy site at http://www.wonka.com/wonkafactory/shome.htm?section=dod , where visitors can watch a video about the Day of the Dead and read background information. Visitors can also build a virtual altar, and people in the Los Angeles area can also enter an in-person altar-building contest. Another FLTEACH user recommends the AZ Central website at http://www.azcentral.com/ent/dead . Visitors to this website, which is available in Spanish or English, can read about the history of this celebration and access patterns for projects such as papel picado. Another FLTEACH user points out that supplementary readings about the Day of the Dead are available for download in English and Spanish from the Hearst Museum at Berkeley at http://hearstmuseum.berkeley.edu/exhibitions/mexico2/supp.html . For more activity ideas, search the FLTEACH archives for (Day of the Dead) or (Día de los muertos) at http://listserv.buffalo.edu/cgi-bin/wa?S1=flteach .

Title: Superior-Level Spanish Resource: Human Rights in Latin America
Body: From http://larcnet.sdsu.edu/tech.php?page=humanrights The Human Rights project focuses on understanding human rights issues in Latin America (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico) by examining authentic Spanish language multinational communications and discourse. The main objectives of this project combine two domains of inquiry: regional political studies focused on Latin America and on assessing on-line means to acquire advanced to superior level reading and writing skills through digital reading activities and computer mediated communication (CMC) with other learners. Through the interactive exploration of language materials, learners will establish a point of view that is substantiated by on-line research and documentation. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the meaning of these historical and political events to their own lives, as well as to those of the speakers portrayed in the media. They will formulate questions for interlocutors in other universities and in other countries and articulate informed opinions about current events, perhaps negotiating meaning with native speakers in order to form these opinions. They will engage in critical thinking activities and to learn to judge the veracity and relevance of the point of view of the creators of the various websites offered in the annotated bibliographic references. Visit the project website at http://larc.sdsu.edu/humanrights .
