Title: Call for Papers: Reading and Writing
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-2186.html Call For Papers Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal A Special Issue: Acquiring Reading in Two Languages: Linguistic and Orthographic Factors The special issue is devoted to original research on the acquisition of reading in two languages simultaneously. As the special issue aims to promote a linguistic perspective on reading research, papers accepted for publication will have to show that linguistic principles have been integrated into the design of the study, the development of the tasks, and the interpretation of the findings. Researchers will be required to provide relevant comparative linguistic information about the languages under study. Only papers using experimental or quasi experimental design will be considered for acceptance. All papers will be subject to the normal blind review process of the journal. Topics may include: 1. The effect of the language's phonological system on phonological awareness. 2. The effect of the language's morphological structure (e.g., concatenated vs. non-concatenated) on morphological awareness (inflectional or derivational). 3. Orthographic depth and the relevance of phonological and morphological skills to reading (accuracy, fluency, etc.). 4. Shared phonological and morphological processes in bilingual reading. 5. Cross-linguistic differences in the acquisition of foundation literacy skills. Call deadline: February 1, 2008. Title: Online Presentation: Making Standards-based Lessons Understandable for English Learners: The SIOP Model
Body: From http://www.schoolsmovingup.net/cs/wested/view/e/2058 CREATE Co-Sponsored Event: Making Standards-based Lessons Understandable for English Learners: The SIOP Model Primary Presenter: Jana Echevarria, Professor of Education, California State University, Long Beach November 8, 2007 12:00pm - 1:30pm Pacific Time This presentation is co-sponsored by SchoolsMovingUp and CREATE (Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners) and focuses on the challenges English learners encounter in learning grade-level content (e.g., math, science, social studies) through a second language. In this interactive online presentation Jana Echevarria, Professor of Education at California State University, Long Beach, will provide an overview of the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model of instruction, which provides educators with a research-based approach for making standards-based lessons understandable for English learners. With an emphasis on engaging learners and providing ample opportunity for students to use academic English in meaningful ways, the SIOP’s 8 components and 30 features offer a framework around which lessons are organized. With its growing body of research, the SIOP Model has been shown to improve the achievement of students whose teachers implemented it to a high degree. The observation protocol is used by school administrators, teachers, staff developers, and university faculty for observing and quantifying a lesson’s effectiveness. Currently the SIOP Model is used in all 50 states in the U.S. and in several countries. For more information or to sign up, go to http://www.schoolsmovingup.net/cs/wested/view/e/2058 .
