Title: Oral Language Archive
Body: From http://ml.hss.cmu.edu/mlrc/ola/general/overview.html The Oral Language Archive is a collection of recordings of native speakers for the study of foreign languages. The Archive's unit of progress is the Volume, comprising 72 minutes of digital audio on compact-disc. Each Volume contains up to 50 dialogues, recorded using topical guidelines developed in the European Union to characterize the language needs of employees traveling and living internationally. Students working with properly contextualized OLA recordings are better prepared for common real-life situations involving foreign languages and cultures. Volumes on audio CD are available from Carnegie Mellon University. Site licenses for Archive volumes are also available, for which dialogues will be distributed in a format appropriate for LAN or Intranet use. It is also possible to license dialogues for inclusion in courseware for commercial or academic redistribution. Samples in various languages can be played from this web site. Samples and more information are available at http://ml.hss.cmu.edu/mlrc/ola .

Title: New Book: Corpora in the Foreign Language Classroom
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-329.html Title: Corpora in the Foreign Language Classroom: Selected papers from the Sixth International Conference on Teaching and Language Corpora (TaLC 6) Editors: Encarnación Hidalgo, Luis Quereda, and Juan Santana Publisher: Rodopi Summary: The papers published in this volume were originally presented at the Sixth International Conference on Teaching and Language Corpora (4-7 July 2004 Granada, Spain) and reflect the latest developments that have taken place in the field of the teaching applications of text corpora, with a special emphasis on their use in the foreign language classroom. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section sets the scene for what this collection of essays aims to be. It deals with the issue of what corpus linguistics can do not only for the understanding of the nature of language itself but also for language learning and language acquisition. The second section tackles the issues of corpus design and corpus exploitation and provides the reader with a great variety of evidence in favour of corpora exploitation for the building of a successful teaching environment. The final section deals with practical applications of corpora in the foreign language classroom. Although each of the papers here reports particular experiences in very different teaching and learning contexts, as a whole they show that corpora can be used on the spot in a language teaching context by teachers and learners without extensive training in computational tools. Title: Call for Papers: Language Learning and Technology
Body: Language Learning and Technology From http://llt.msu.edu/vol11num1/call.html Call for Papers for Special Issue of Language Learning and Technology Theme: Technology and Learning Grammar Advances in computer technology offer a range of new opportunities for language learners to gain awareness of grammatical structures and to develop L2 grammar proficiency. Since the inception of the internet, the amount of grammar exercises has been increasing steadily, in part due to useful authoring tools that have been developed over the past years. This special issue of Language Learning & Technology aims at providing a variety of perspectives in this area through research articles and theoretical discussions of technology-supported grammar instruction, language acquisition, and testing. Possible submissions include but are not limited to: * a comprehensive literature review of technology-based grammar instruction * a discussion of theoretical frameworks for aspects of technology-based grammar instruction * theoretical models of error diagnosis and error correction (e.g., NLP-based or nonparser-based approaches, student modeling techniques) * research on the link between computer-based activities that promote grammar skills and those that promote language acquisition * overviews of research on the role of technology in developing grammar proficiency * studies of the efficacy and/or utilization of corpora, concordancers, proofing tools and other grammar aids to support grammar acquisition and proficiency * studies of corrective feedback, learner control and error correction with respect to technology-based grammar instruction * comparisons of technology use (i.e., proofing tools) by native versus foreign language learners * studies of computer-based instruments for assessing various aspects of grammar proficiency * computer-based testing of grammar proficiency Deadline for submission of abstract: May 1, 2007.
