Title: News Article: Panel Recommends Less Emphasis on Literature in College Language Programs
Body: From http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2007/01/02/languages Dramatic Plan for Language Programs — Scott Jaschik January 2, 2007 A panel of some of the top professors of foreign languages has concluded that the programs that train undergraduate majors and new Ph.D.’s are seriously off course, with so much emphasis on literature that broader understanding of cultures and nations has been lost. The panel, organized by the Modern Language Association, wants to jettison the traditional model in which language instruction is followed primarily by literary study. In its place, the panel would like to see departments merge study of language and literature while adding more study of history, culture, economics, and society — in some respects turning language programs into area studies programs. The overhaul could also prompt a rethinking of the way foreign language departments relate to the U.S. government. The last year has seen federal agencies take new interest in foreign language education — a shift that is welcomed by language professors but that also raises concerns for many who question whether military and intelligence officials really understand language education or have the right motives. Title: New Study: Bilingualism Delays Onset of Dementia
Body: From http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/11012007/3/canada-bilingualism-delays-onset-dementia-study.html Bilingualism delays onset of dementia: study January 11, 2007 OTTAWA (CBC) - Lifelong bilingualism can help delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease and other dementia in the elderly by an average of four years, according to a small study by Canadian researchers. Patients who spoke more than one language reported memory loss or other dementia symptoms on average four years later than people who spoke only one language. Principal investigator Ellen Bialystok, a psychologist and associate scientist at the Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest, said the results were unusually clear. "Rarely does a study give such clean results, so this was surprising to us," she told CBC News Online. Bilingualism forces the control functions of the brain's frontal lobe into action, said Bialystok, who conducted the research with psychologist Fergus Craik and neurologist Morris Freedman. "If you have two languages in your brain, you need a way to keep them straight, otherwise you might say the wrong thing," she said. "It's one of the things that often goes wrong with people suffering from dementia. They can no longer control their speech." The frontal lobes, which control planning and other high-level functions, are also used in language. Research has found exercising that part of the brain can help build up a "cognitive reserve," which can stave off dementia. Title: News Article: Resistance to Mandarin Immersion Program in Palo Alto, California
Body: From http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/living/education/16431969.htm P.A. school board casts doubts on Mandarin immersion By Sharon Noguchi Mercury News January 11, 2007 After the Cupertino School District began the nation's first Mandarin immersion elementary program eight years ago, interest in teaching Chinese skyrocketed, with schools from San Mateo to Charlotte, N.C., following suit. But the Palo Alto school district probably won't be joining them. On Tuesday night, faced with a blizzard of opposition, trustees indicated they can't support Superintendent Mary Frances Callan's recommendation to offer Mandarin classes to 40 kindergartners and first graders in August. They said they were worried that the program would further burden administrators, crowd elementary and middle schools, and divert attention from projects such as improving writing.
