Title: Western Initiative for Language Leadership
Body: From http://casls.uoregon.edu/will.php WILL is a chance for novice world language teachers in the Western United States to become better teachers and leaders. The two-year program focuses on the unique challenges faced by new teachers in rural areas. WILL, a joint initiative sponsored by the Center for Applied Second Language Studies and the Pacific Northwest Council for Languages, is currently seeking candidates for 2007-09. WILL builds upon teachers’ pedagogical and leadership skills. WILL teachers will participate in two summer institutes in Portland, Oregon; the first will focus on action research and the second will focus on leadership. In action teaching, teachers prepare and carry out projects in their classroom throughout the year, making changes to their methods as they see what works. Participants remain connected to each other, their mentors (comprised of former WILL participants), national experts, and CASLS staff. Application deadline: February 16, 2007. Title: News Article: Language Translators in High Demand
Body: From http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1576836-1,00.html Translation Nation By JEFFREY RESSNER Friday, Jan. 12, 2007 Wanted: "Arabic Linguist ... Ability to deal unobtrusively with the local populace ... Must be able to live in a harsh environment." The pay isn't mentioned, but defense contractor L-3 Communications recently offered interpreters more than $175,000 annually to work in Iraq. Danger is just one way that the linguistics industry--interpreters who relay live chat and translators who process documents--has changed dramatically. More benignly, the Web and the global economy have led to 7.5% annual growth in the market, now pegged as a $9.4 billion business, according to research group Common Sense Advisory. While much of that is due to the military, there has been renewed growth elsewhere. "Firms from Starbucks to McDonald's now have to communicate and market to customers in dozens of different languages," says Common Sense Advisory president Don DePalma. Title: Latin in a Texas Elementary School
Body: From http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/journalgazette/news/16457296.htm Brentwood’s students buck poverty trend: Community cooperation given the credit By Krista J. Stockman The Journal Gazette January 22, 2007 Brentwood Elementary – also known as Brentwood Latin Grammar School – is one school that has found a way to be successful even with more than half its students living in poverty. Nearly two-thirds of the school’s students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, yet 83 percent of students in the school passed the ISTEP+ exams. The school had the second-highest passing rate in Fort Wayne Community Schools. It’s difficult for those involved with the school to pinpoint exactly what makes Brentwood different from other area schools. They say it is a combination of dedicated teachers who work as a team and a network of parents and community members who support them. The most obvious differences about Brentwood – children wear uniforms and learn Latin – are not given as much credit for the school’s success.
