Title: Funding: Native Voices Endowment
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-294.html The Endangered Language Fund will be managing and distributing a new $1.6 million grant program, the Native Voices Endowment. This money comes from the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Council, which received the revenues from the U.S. Mint's sale of the 2004 Lewis & Clark Commemorative Coin. Grants through this program will be available to the Native American tribes that came in contact with the Lewis and Clark Expedition between 1804-1806. The investment will be managed by the Oregon Community Foundation. It will generate an estimated $75,000 in interest each year, which will be available to enrolled tribal members, tribal government language programs, tribal community language programs and tribal schools and colleges. Proposals will be accepted for Native American language education programs, individual study by Native American language students, and research efforts to document and record Native American languages for future preservation and education. To learn more about this grant program, and to view a list of eligible tribes, please visit the Endangered Language Fund website: www.endangeredlanguagefund.org

Title: New York Learning Standards for Native Language Arts
Body: From http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/biling/resource/NLA.html The state of New York has published three documents for ESL teachers: The Teaching of Language Arts to Limited English Proficient Students: A Resource Guide for All Teachers; The Teaching of Language Arts to Limited English Proficient Students: Learning Standards for English as a Second Language; and The Teaching of Language Arts to Limited English Proficient/English Language Learners: Learning Standards for Native Language Arts. The third volume, Native Language Arts Learning Standards, is intended to support quality instruction, curriculum development, and assessment for those students who are placed in bilingual programs. It is also intended to expand the resources available to all educators of LEP/ELLs in “building a bridge” toward the attainment of the New York State learning standards in English language arts. This document is also intended to assist bilingual education teachers and curriculum developers in providing rigorous and challenging instruction in native language arts to LEP/ELLs. Its contents not only provide information related to the NLA standards and performance indicators themselves, but also contain information that can be useful to mainstream and ESL teachers by presenting an overview of the varieties of linguistic groups and language families represented in the State’s school districts, along with a brief linguistic analysis of commonly spoken languages and English. In addition, several learning experiences in native languages are presented to serve as models for implementing the NLA standards in native language arts classes. The third document is available in pdf format at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/biling/resource/NLA.html .
