Title: Scholarships Available for U.S. High School Students with and without Disabilities
Body: Are you a young person age 15 - 17 who is interested in learning about another culture, trying new food, gaining leadership skills, and sharing your experiences with high school students with and without disabilities from another country? Are you interested in having fun while discussing issues that are important to you? If so, join students with and without disabilities from Bahrain in the Middle East for a 5-day leadership program in Eugene, Oregon, filled with inclusive cross-cultural and educational activities. Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is currently seeking young people with and without disabilities from diverse cultural backgrounds to apply for an upcoming 5-day international leadership exchange program in Eugene, Oregon July 13 - 17, 2007. Participants will be eligible and encouraged to apply for a 21-day cross-cultural exchange program to Bahrain in Spring 2008. All expenses covered by MIUSA through a U.S. Department of State grant. Title: 2007 US/Costa Rica: Youth Leadership and Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Disability Rights Exchange Program
Body: Are you a young person with a disability from the United States aged 18 - 24, or do you know someone who is? Join us for an international exchange program to Costa Rica. Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is currently seeking young people with disabilities from diverse cultural backgrounds to apply for an upcoming sixteen-day international exchange program to Costa Rica. Tentative dates for the program are June 20 - July 5, 2007. Apply by March 2, 2007. Late applications considered as space permits. Applications are available in alternative formats. Generous partial scholarships available! A sixteen-day exchange program to Costa Rica will focus on leadership through disability rights and cross-cultural sharing. Participants will take part in discussions on disability rights and leadership with Costa Rican disability organizations, practice Spanish through immersion, and experience the food and culture with members of the local community. Participants will also take part in service learning activities. American Sign Language interpretation and materials in alternative formats will be provided. Other accessibility arrangements will be negotiated to ensure full participation. SHOICHET St. Petersburg Times January 5, 2007 The podcast is becoming a popular way for word buffs and foreign language enthusiasts to learn something new. The iTunes Store alone lists more than 100 free podcasts focusing on languages from Turkish to Tagalog. "Technology is making the most amazing difference in the way we teach languages," says Ava Chitwood, an assistant professor at the University of South Florida who uses podcasts in her introductory world languages class. "A student can be off campus and still do practice and drill work. You don't have to be in a language lab. You don't have to be in the classroom." And with podcasts, you don't have to be an official student. "Anyone, any time can go on and learn a language," Chitwood says. School board member Phillip A. Niedzielski-Eichner (Providence), backed by other members and school administrators, plans to propose a resolution that would authorize officials to refuse to give immigrant students tests that they think most would fail. The resolution could come to a vote as soon as Jan. 25. If it passes, several Fairfax schools probably will fall short of federal academic standards. School officials in Arlington and Harrisonburg are considering a similar step. As Congress prepares to debate renewal of the five-year-old federal law, controversy has emerged over how to measure the progress of children learning English. The federal government objected last year to the way Virginia and 17 other states test limited-English students. Often, federal officials indicated, the state tests for such students were not demanding enough. They said that all students in a given state must be held to the same standards. Body: From http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2007-01-09-language-children_x.htm More children learn more than one language By Beth Walton, USA TODAY January 10, 2007 Not only is learning a foreign language easier for children than it is for adults, but children who are exposed to other languages also do better in school, score higher on standardized tests, are better problem solvers and are more open to diversity, says François Thibaut, who runs The Language Workshop for Children, which has nine schools around the East Coast. Thibaut is a pioneer in foreign languages for babies and children and is the author of Professor Toto, an award-winning home-based foreign-language curriculum for parents and children. "When I started 35 years ago, very few people believed in this idea. Teaching kids who are 6 months seemed crazy," Thibaut says. Today, Thibaut says, his schools can't keep up with the demand for classes; about 1,000 students are enrolled and even more are on waiting lists. The schools serve students 6 months to 9 years old and offer courses in Spanish, French, Italian and, new this year, Chinese, which Thibaut says is becoming the most requested class. The report consists of a number of national- and state-level spreadsheets with data from Census 2000 broken down by type of household, age of householder, education attainment, and income. Some key findings: 215,423,557 Americans speak only English. 46,951,595 Americans speak a language other than English. 21,320,407 Americans speak English less than "very well."
