Title: DVD Review: Das Leben der Anderen - The Life of Others
Body: From http://german.about.com/od/dvdvideo/fr/dasleben.htm Life in East Germany - The Way It Was Review by Hyde Flippo Unlike other recent films portraying life in East Germany (Good Bye Lenin!, Sonnenallee), Das Leben der Anderen does not sugar-coat life in East Germany. It dramatizes the true cost that citizens of the German Democratic Republic had to pay for living in their communist dictatorship. We learn how much time and effort the Stasi (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, "secret police") spent on spying on East German citizens — and how this impacted both the targets and the spies. Read the full review at http://german.about.com/od/dvdvideo/fr/dasleben.htm .

Title: Suggestions for Teaching Telling Time
Body: FLTEACH I am about to introduce telling time in French to my 2 Level 1 classes. I have used manipulatives before (each student gets a little clock on which they have to set the time that I or a classmate says). Does anyone have any other ideas for teaching this unit? Door, K. French: Telling Time. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 16 Sept 2006). --- Have you come across l’horloge de Mathilde: http://thierry.collard.free.fr/horloge.html [This is a downloadable freeware program for 6-8-year-olds to practice telling time] Foley, S. Re: French: Telling Time. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 16 Sept 2006). --- I like to copy movie listings from the paper or TV schedules and then ask them questions about those times. It usually sparks a good TL conversation about whether or not they've seen it or if it is good or not etc. Landrum, L. Re: French: Telling Time. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 16 Sept 2006). --- After they learn the basics, I start randomly asking them Quelle heure est-il? at all times of the period, very randomly, to see who is getting it and who isn't, every day, going forward. We also play telling time bingo. We also make paper plate clocks which they design and decorate, to quiz each other. Steriadis, M. Re: French: Telling Time. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 16 Sept 2006). Steinam, P. Re: French: Telling Time. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 17 Sept 2006). --- One of the activities my students enjoy is the "living clock". Have each student stand facing the clock and while you call out the times _in order_ they move their hands to represent the time. I think this help some of them get the idea of "moins" as they come _up to_ the hour. I tell them to just think of moving their left hand/arm when they hear "moins". Freeman, M. teaching time in French. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 17 Sept 2006).
