Title: Guadalupe School Praised for ESL Program
Body: From http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,650214757,00.html Guadalupe School gets national plaudits By Tiffany Erickson Deseret Morning News December 13, 2006 Guadalupe School has received national recognition for its volunteer program that serves both adults and students. The Voluntary Improvement Program was recognized as one of the top 10 volunteer-based English as a second language programs in the nation earlier this fall. And Tuesday the school announced plans to mentor other adult ESL programs nationwide that want to adopt a similar model as part of a national literacy project. Established nearly 40 years ago, Guadalupe serves disadvantaged children, many of them immigrants with non-English-speaking parents. Parent-educators coach parents from birth on how to read with their children while elementary-age students have one-on-one reading and study time with school volunteers. In the evening, volunteers in the adult VIP program teach English to low-income immigrant adults. The students are placed in small groups and are instructed by volunteer tutors who work under staff members. Read the entire article at http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,650214757,00.html .

Title: Article on Teaching Vocabulary
Body: Teaching Vocabulary By Linda Diamond and Linda Gutlohn LD OnLine, 2006 In "Teaching Vocabulary," Linda Diamond and Linda Gutlohn discuss the following components of vocabulary instruction: extensive reading, instruction of specific words, instruction in independent word-learning strategies, and word consciousness activities. They stress multiple exposures to vocabulary in different contexts and explicit instruction in word-learning strategies, such as dictionary use, morphemic analysis, and contextual analysis. The authors also suggest that drawing on cognates (when applicable) can be beneficial for ELLs. Finally, they include a lesson plan about animal idioms to illustrate how to teach word consciousness and a lesson plan that uses mnemonics for word-meaning recall. (Summary prepared by NCELA.) Title: Proficiency Assessments
Body: Do you have students entering your program whose proficiency level is unknown? The following are some proficiency assessment resources suggested by members of the FLTEACH listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU ) and from a Google search. --- SIL International sells a series of checklists broken down into the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) for self-assessment with its LinguaLinks software package. More information is available at http://www.sil.org/lingualinks/LANGUAGELEARNING/MangngYrLnggLrnngPrgrm/SelfAssessmentChecklistsBasedO.htm . --- Soft Study Inc. has a set of placement exams available in the following languages: ESL, Spanish, German, French, and Russian. The company plans to add Chinese soon. Computerized Adaptive Placement Exams (CAPE) use state-of-the-art computer testing techniques to accurately and efficiently place students in the first two years of college language courses. CAPE selects each test item as a result of the answer to the previous question. When the student answers an item correctly, a more difficult question is presented; if an item is answered incorrectly, an easier question is given. In short, the test "adapts" to the student's level of ability and will accurately determine the student's competency level in about twenty minutes. More information is available at https://www.softstudy.com/products/CAPE.cfm . --- DIALANG is a free downloadable assessment tool that has been developed by more than 20 major European institutions, with the backing of the European Commission. It is based on the Council of Europe's "Common European Framework of reference", which has become established throughout Europe as the most widely recognized frame of reference in the field of language learning. Tests are available in reading, writing, listening, grammar, and vocabulary in the following 14 languages: Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Icelandic, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish. More information and download available at http://www.dialang.org/english/index.htm . --- The Center for Applied Second Language Studies at the University of Oregon has developed an online reading and writing assessment tool called the Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP), which requires only a recent browser and an Internet connection. Schools and colleges around the country now use STAMP to evaluate programs, place students, and provide accountability data. More information about STAMP is available at http://casls.uoregon.edu/stamp2.php or at http://onlinells.com/stampplace.php . --- For younger students, the SOPA and ELLOPA interviews are innovative language proficiency assessment instruments designed to allow young students to demonstrate their highest level of performance in oral fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and listening comprehension. Title: Activities to Practice Question Words
Body: To practice question words, have them make an invitation to a dance, prom, Friday night football game, service project event, or some activity they like to do. Perhaps dividing the class and doing an information gap activity where one half has the event specifics (football game, 6:30, Friday October ?, 2005, to show school spirit, home team from our school, away team from place X) and the other half has the corresponding questions (What?, When? Why? From where?) would be useful. Not everyone who receives event specifics has to receive the same information. You could take ideas from several events. Remember that "When?" could have several meanings, including time, date, and day. Remember to explain that the vocabulary words for date referring to a numerical date and an appointment are different: fecha vs. cita. Conn, A. question activity. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 18 Sept 2005). --- AFTER you've introduced them, how about "Jeopardy" to reinforce them? But not like they do on TV, where the 'clue' is NOT the way a "real person" would answer. Rather, for an answer like "En su oficina," the question would have to be "¿Dónde está ?" and "¿Quién es ?" or "¿Dónde está el perro?" One thing I like about this is that although each answer has wrong questions, there are also a lot of right questions for most answers. Creative students can get a few laughs while you play. If you have money to spend, you can even get quite fancy: http://www.wieser-ed.com/classroomjeopardy.htm Groleau, W. Re: question words. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 18 Sept 2005). --- Using vocabulary from chapter 1 (Buen Viaje) I wrote 9 questions and answers on paper, made copies, laminate the copies, cut them in rectangles, put the 18 slips of paper in an envelope. I have the kids get with a partner. I pass out the envelopes and give the kids time to match the questions and answers. Brown, T. Re: question words. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 18 Sept 2005).
