Body: From http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200612/kt2006121418024111990.htm English-Only Town to Be Set Up on Cheju By Lee Hyo-sik Staff Reporter December 14, 2006 The government plans to establish an English-only town on Cheju Island to provide high-quality English learning opportunities to students who would otherwise head overseas for language learning, the Ministry of Finance and Economy said yesterday. The envisioned town, to be built on 1.15 million pyong (3.79 million square meters) of public land, will include an English learning center, elementary and secondary schools, and colleges along with a range of educational and residential facilities that will help students learn the language. The village is part of government efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of the country’s educational services sector as many students go to English-speaking countries and spend large amounts of money to study English. Title: Schools See Increase in Non-Native English Speakers
Body: From http://www.eagletribune.com/nhnews/local_story_309094403 Schools see increase in non-native English speakers By Margo Sullivan , Staff writer Eagle-Tribune November 5, 2006 As several Massachusetts school districts are experiencing increasing numbers of English language learners (ELLs), officials are making strides to meet the needs of their new students. The criteria for ESOL services is based on whether a child learned a language other than English first or is living in a home where he or she is exposed to another language, through grandparents, for example. While children typically need between three and five years to learn a social vocabulary, she said, they take five to eight years to acquire an academic vocabulary. Salem (MA) Superintendent Michael Delahanty said his district has added one full-time and one part-time ESOL-certified teacher over the past two years due to better identification of children already in school, not only to an influx of new students, he said. He also said that children, especially in elementary grades, have done better in ESOL programs than they did in bilingual education classes. "The concept of ESOL, as opposed to bilingual education, is immersion, so we create the structure that requires the student to be thrown into the deep end of the pool immediately," he said. "They're given support. It's very good support, but not a lot of support." Read the full article at http://www.eagletribune.com/nhnews/local_story_309094403 .

Title: Online Vocabulary Pictures with Audio
Body: From http://www.languageguide.org LanguageGuide.org offers free sound integrated resources for learning languages. Resources include the following: Pictorial Vocabulary Guides Learning the thousands of words needed to be comfortable in a language is a great challenge. The vocabulary guides are in essence virtual worlds. Users visit different parts of this world (i.e. insects, the family, the farm). They can then place their cursor over any of the images and hear their names pronounced and see them spelled out. In some pages, a notepad is displayed next to the title. Placing the cursor over this notepad will reveal a list of supplementary vocabulary . Vocabulary guides are available in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese. Grammar Guides So far introductory grammar guides have been developed for French and Spanish ( audio hasn't been fully integrated yet). Users of these guides, can hear the pronunciation of sentences and words by placing the cursor over them. The guides also feature interactive audio based quizzes as well as additional features. We eventually hope to sponsor the creation of guides for all the world's major languages. Interactive Readings The interactive readings help users develop comprehension skills by allowing him or her hear the reading of a text, maneuver within the sound track and rehear difficult phrases, as well as see the text of what is being read. In addition, the readings allow students to build vocabulary and develop reading skills. Right now only readings for learning French are available but we hope to eventually create extensive readings in different languages, tailored for different levels of fluency. For an example of a reading see Chère Maman, cher Papa (dear mother, dear father). Visit the site at http://www.languageguide.org .

Title: New Book: Synthesizing Research on Language Learning and Teaching
Body: From http://www.benjamins.com/cgi-bin/t_bookview.cgi?bookid=LL%26LT%2013 Synthesizing Research on Language Learning and Teaching Edited by John M. Norris and Lourdes Ortega John Benjamins Publishing Company This volume presents the first collection of work on research synthesis in applied linguistics. It introduces readers to a cutting-edge approach for reviewing and summarizing exactly what accumulated research has to say about theoretical and practical subjects. John Norris and Lourdes Ortega first elucidate the value and practice of synthesis, and they challenge all members of the research community to adopt a “synthetic ethic”. The book then features seven empirical syntheses, each modeling rigorous synthetic practice in definitively reviewing the state of knowledge and research quality in important domains. Included are five meta-analyses on: Universal Grammar; Task-Based Interaction; Corrective Feedback; Instructed Pragmatics Development; and Reading Strategy Training. Also included are a qualitative meta-synthesis on Effective Teaching for English Language Learners, and a historiographical synthesis of Proficiency Assessment practices. Rounding out the collection are commentaries by two renowned experts in language learning and teaching research: Nick Ellis and Craig Chaudron. The book is intended for a number of target groups: applied linguists, graduate students, methodologists, teachers, curriculum developers and policy makers. For a review of the book, visit http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-3578.html . For publisher’s information, go to http://www.benjamins.com/cgi-bin/t_bookview.cgi?bookid=LL%26LT%2013 .

Title: Conference and Call for Presenters
Body: Second Symposium for Immersion and Dual Language Pre-School Educators It is with great pleasure that we announce the second "Symposium for Immersion and Dual Language Pre-School Educators" to be held in Tucson, Arizona, 16 - 17 February 2007. The Symposium will be of interest to Early Childhood Educators, Linguists, Program Administrators and to anyone with an interest in the teaching and learning of languages to young children. Call for Participants Interested Participants are asked to contact the organisers (info@TucsonIPE.com) for a Participant Registration Form. Call for Presenters One of the points from last year's Symposium was the value of sessions based on shared practice, so this will be a key theme of the 2007 event. We are seeking session presenters in any area related to Pre-School Immersion and Dual Language teaching and learning, and in particular on : * Programme marketing * Staff recruitment and retention * Resources and materials (finding and purchasing) * Finances (including handling "bad debts") Sessions will be 45 or 105 minutes and "sharing of sound practice" will be preferred. This will not be a high-tech event to keep costs low; presenters will need to bring their own equipment, for example if they want PP. Interested Presenters are asked to contact the organisers (info@TucsonIPE.com) for a Presenter Registration Form. There is a possibility of expanding the Symposium, depending on participant numbers, so early registration is advised. International School of Tucson.
