Title: Now Available Online: Proficiency-Oriented Language Instruction and Assessment: A Curriculum Handbook for Teachers
Body: From the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition, http://www.carla.umn.edu/index.html The Proficiency-Oriented Language Instruction and Assessment: A Curriculum Handbook for Teachers, edited by Diane J. Tedick (2002), was designed to provide world language teachers with the background knowledge, ideas, and resources for implementing proficiency-oriented language instruction and classroom-based performance measures into their curriculum. Tied to the national Standards for Foreign Language Education, the Handbook gives teachers a solid foundation of the principles and practices that are central to standards-based and proficiency-oriented language instruction and assessment. The Handbook gives teachers a wide variety of tasks and activities to use in the classroom along with ideas for adapting these activities for different levels and languages and longer curricular packages. While this 622-page resource is still available in print through the CARLA working paper series, it was recently put online to make it more available to classroom teachers and language teacher educators. The sections include: -Background Information -Proficiency Oriented Language Instruction and Assessment: Standards, Philosophies, and Considerations for Assessment -Key Materials -Tasks and Units -Resources for Teachers For more information about the handbook and to access the online version, visit http://www.carla.umn.edu/articulation/MNAP_handbook.html .

Title: New Article: A Catch-22 for Language Learners (ELL and NCLB)
Body: From the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, http://www.ascd.org/portal/site/ascd Educational Leadership Volume 64, Number 3 November 2006 A Catch-22 for Language Learners Wayne E. Wright Abstract No Child Left Behind is leaving English language learners behind because it defies logic and common sense, is internally self-contradictory, and sets AYP expectations that the subgroup cannot possibly attain. Although the U.S. Department of Education allows states to use a variety of strategies to avoid having a Limited English Proficiency (LEP) subgroup, few teachers and administrators are aware of these and spend precious time, energy, and resources preparing English learners for taking high-stakes tests. English language learners should be excluded from the regular state tests, at least until they have enough English proficiency to meaningfully participate. Instead of narrowly focusing on preparing English language learners for state tests, teachers should focus on meeting students' linguistic, cultural, and academic needs. Title: Call for Papers: ACTFL-AATG 2007: Austrian Movies in the Classroom
Body: Abstracts of 300 words are invited for a proposed AATG 2007 session, Austrian Movies in the Classroom: Showcase for Culture and Issues (subtitle will be formed from topics submitted) for the ACTFL conference 2007 in San Antonio, with an emphasis on "bridging.” Austrian recent and current movies have demonstrated a new quality of opening up the horizon of the Austrian movie public to new questions and problems linked to neighboring European Union-nations in a way that transcends political slogans and assessments. They have made Austria into a new link between East and West, North and South, particularly also to the Slavic world and beyond. Film makes these new territories visible and language brings the new aspects, problems and realities into the conscience of Austria. The German language is a cultural bridge in Austria that traditionally has been a multicultural area, embracing multiple ethnic and cultural areas, and what better forum than the American classroom to present the variety now evident in the exciting Austrian movie productions. All aspects welcome. Please, kindly add your personal information about affiliation, addresses, fax/phone, e-mail to facilitate submission. Deadline for submissions to mlcaputomayr@hotmail.com until 12/12/06 Papers intended for publication by ACSAL From Caputo-Mayr, M. [AATG-L] Call for Papers ACTFL-AATG 2007: Austrian Movies in the Classroom.Showcase for Culture and Issues. American Association of Teachers of German (AATG@LISTSERV.IUPUI.EDU, 22 Nov. 2006).
