Title: Endangered Languages Presentation Available
Body: From the Endangered Language Fund, http://www.endangeredlanguagefund.org/index.html The Endangered Language Fund is developing an education and outreach program designed to educate students about the scope, diversity, and future of the world’s languages. We believe that foreign language programs should incorporate an understanding of language as a human phenomenon into their curricula. In too many cases, students learn languages without understanding the global context of multilingualism and language interaction. A richer, cross-curricular understanding of language will encourage students to think about their language studies in broader terms. ELF will bring a presentation about endangered languages to schools in New England. The presentation is designed to contextualize foreign language learning by exploring how some languages come to be spoken by hundreds of millions of people while others disappear completely. We will also examine what happens when a language disappears, and what is lost as a result of the current global decline in linguistic diversity. For more information about scheduling a presentation, visit http://www.endangeredlanguagefund.org/edu.html .

Title: News Article: Mandarin Speaks to a Growing Audience
Body: From http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-me-mandarin26nov26,1,7886515.story?page=1&track=crosspromo&coll=la-headlines-frontpage Mandarin speaks to a growing audience By Mitchell Landsberg, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer November 26, 2006 “English is rarely heard in Lisa Yang's class at the Chinese American International School, despite the fact that few students are native speakers of Mandarin and fewer than half come from families with Chinese ancestry. At a time when the United States is frantically trying to increase the ranks of students in "critical languages" such as Mandarin, students here are ahead of the curve — way ahead.” The article discusses a current shortage of Mandarin teachers at a time when demand for the language is growing. Besides the Chinese American International School in San Francisco, other programs mentioned include Hanban and programs in Chicago and Portland, OR.
