Title: Schools wanted to pilot online assessment
Body: From: "Sachiko Kamioka" Schools wanted to pilot online listening, speaking, readingproficiency assessment ************************************************************* For those who've already signed up for this pilot, this is the second announcement for the same pilot. The pilot starting date has been changed to November 3rd, 2003. Teachers can pick any day between Nov. 3 and Jan. 31. ************************************************************* Dear Japanese teachers, Many of us want to measure our students' proficiency. But existing tests are so expensive and time-consuming that few of us can do it. Now, the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) is developing an integrated online assessment of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In addition to helping the field develop a better way to measure student performance, having your students participate in the pilot will help them understand what they have to do to be proficient in Japanese. We are looking for teachers willing to pilot this online assessment this fall/winter. This assessment, called STAMP 2, measures Interpretive (reading and listening) and well as Presentational (speaking and writing) proficiency. The first pilot will focus on the Interpretive Mode. STAMP 2 is innovative both pedagogically and technically. Real-life tasks assess interpretive and presentational modes in the national standards. The interpretive section (listening and reading) is computer adaptive and its results become available immediately after test. Presentational mode (speaking and writing) sections are graded by human graders. The test uses streaming video and technology to record and deliver sound files over the Internet. To take the test, students just need a recent browser and Quicktime, both of which can be downloaded for free. In this pilot, we would like to get data on listening, reading, and speaking items from Novice-Mid to Intermedite-High. If you are interested, please email jppilot@darkwing.uoregon.edu. Title: Introducing the NAEP Research e-Center: Resources for NAEP Data Users
Body: From: NCESÂ’ National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has rolled out a new component of its web site. This component, called the Research e-Center, is designed to support the continued efforts of researchers and others studying NAEP findings by providing more information about the assessment's technical components. NAEP continually encourages and values the exploration, use, and secondary analysis of its assessment results, and we hope this new resource aids such efforts. On these pages, you can access a variety of reference tools and reports describing NAEP statistical terms and methodological topics of interest to both novice users of NAEP data and experienced secondary-data analysts. You can find out what NAEP data are available for analysis and get information on both online and CD-ROM analysis tools. You will also find listings of funding opportunities, data analysis training, and NAEP-related presentations at conferences. To begin your exploration of these NAEP research tools, go to: http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/researchcenter Check back often for new opportunities, reports, and notices of enhancements to data analysis tools. NAEP wants your feedback on this new section, so please submit your comments via the NAEP web site's "Contact Us" feature.
